to paint or not to paint stairs

Hi, can I ask, my head is wrecked for fear I will make a huge mistake. Moved in 6 wks ago, stairs is the usual pine and I was thinking of doing the whole off white spindles & step risers, dark walnut stained handrail & step tops going up. I am nervous as my walls are painted a lovely natural cream, the floor is crema marfil high gloss tiles. Started on the skirtings, architraves and doors downstairs in Dulux Satinwood Antique White over the last few days and I am starting to think the white stairs may clash with the cream & antique white, should i go the same colour as the skirtings/architraves. Does anyone else have this look and it looks really well (what colours did you use) or do you think I should follow through with just clear varnishing the spindles instead and darker varnish on the handrails and sides. Don't know which would look better??? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, we definitely need to see the fireplace before commenting! Actually, magnolia is a classic and maybe you're best to add colour in your furnishings/accessories, as you have with your new curtains. We need to see the furniture etc. as well. I love dark walls and I think your hall with the shiny floors and the right finish on the wall make it special. You already have the wrought iron, which definitely dictates a certain look. I hesitate to recommend a specific color from my monitor, but look at the BM colors in the 1037’s through the 1078’s and see if there is something there which looks good with the tile.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!
