which way to lay wood effect tiles?

Excuse the mess on the photos ..
We were going to lay a herringbone floor but budget and my husband convincing me it would look too busy changed my mind.
So we have gone for a large oak karndean floor tile.
The photos show where this will be excuse the random fridge freezer and mess.
I think the best way would be horizontal to the entrance and bifolds. A few have said vertical so it leads you through .. but I don’t want the entrance narrowing and I think it can look a bit ten pin bowling. Also the horizontal will then lead around the corner to where the kitchen is.
Opposite the kitchen is a large picture window and the line of tiles will lead to that.
We have discussed horizontal but it makes my OH seasick so to speak .. it messes with his mind.
Anyone agree with me? Or am I breaking all the rules with this idea

5 years agoWhilst it could be laid both ways, I much prefer for the Herringbone patter to be laid horizontally so that it guides the views towards and out the glass.

5 years agoAlways find it hard to start with but I find by plotting areas out in masking tape what plank effect would look like either way - I've really quickly drawn something on paint which is the way I think! I like the planks going along islands :)

Comments (103)Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. Comments (5)We have had a wood floor in our kitchen for 13 yrs now, and we love it. Ours was finished on site, (more durable than engineered) with 3 coats of water based poly on it. It is just now that I am getting ready to recoat it. I have had both engineered and site finished hardwood,. The engineered didn't hold up as well, and we stripped off the finish and applied a new finish. It's more durable now. Finishing on site is more disruptive to your family and home, but it is worth it, because of the durability that comes with it. You won't be sorry at all about the hardwood. It is warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. In the kitchen especially, you have to clean up water, ice cubes, etc asap, and you have to be sure that you have a good dishwasher that doesn't leak (you don't have to put it under the entire dishwasher, just a few boards under the front and in the back). If there's a little water that you don't find immediately, and do later...ice maker leak,etc, in all likelihood, the grain will be raised, but in most cases, it will go down, and be okay. We love our hardwood floors, and hope that you will too. We have it all the way through our first floor, even in our powder room. It's terrific. Comments (10)Hey rinked, Thanks for the idea. I had considered that before, but wan't sure about taking quite that much out of the room. It would be an extra 2-300mm but as per your sketch I hadn't thought about leaving the nook behind the door which lessens the incursion (and in the bed room that space could be used for storage too). We are moving the soil pipe to the side of the house to allow for the bifold downstairs, so the toilet on the outer wall as per your sketch would really be better. Of course we could use a pump or so, but that's not ideal. Bath drainage could also run out that side too. We are completely renovating the room, everything is coming out and it will be tanked and retiled etc, so seams aren't an issue. My main consideration for having the toilet and vanity on the other wall is to perhaps conceal the toilet with a false wall, and also so that the light from the window (extremely bright as south facing) isn't to the side when looking in the mirror. :D Also would really recommend Porcelain tiles not Karndean on the floor, I had multiple holes where gunk got in around the sink and island over the years! Maybe I shouldn't be as clumsy with knives! Porcleain can be much more hard baring and with hot pipes / ufh underneath would be the best way for me!

5 years agoFrom a professional, laying perspective, it's normal to run planks into (vertically) the windows… so that's opposite to the way you prefer, hapiak.
Here's a thought… what about diagonally. You can do that if the area is a decent size, which your's appears to be.
This room was about 55m².

5 years agoI’m sure both (or actually all three) ways would look good but I have a slight preference for lengthways, which is what we went for some time ago.
I feel it it works better with the incoming light.

I like this but I’m now worrying about the difference in light being magnified and the number of joins to the island/back run of the kitchen

5 years agoA not so good picture of original floor we put in the entrance. A little obscured by all the appliances so the hall is much narrower here .. but here 15 yrs ago we laid them lengthways. I don’t remember debating about it then?
