Noisy Cooker and Hood

Hi Everyone

I have just purchased a new flat and I have discovered a problem with the kitchen. I would therefore be very grateful indeed for any advice as to how to solve this problem.

The cooker and hood fans are very loud and noisy. Unfortunately, they have been installed right against the party wall of my neighbour's flat and he has complained to me that when they are switched on, it causes a very unpleasant vibration and hum in his flat. I have visited his flat and have found out that this is indeed true. For him, it is as if a sonic warfare device has been attached to his flat. I have therefore decided not to use the cooker and hood for now and just cook my food in my microwave oven.

I should explain that the person I purchased my Flat from did a refurbishment just before selling it so this is a new problem for my neighbour and myself.

I should also explain that I know next to nothing about the building and refurbishment trades.

It seems to me that my options are as follows:

1. Replace the appliances with much quieter appliances. Does anyone on this forum know which company produces the quietest cookers and hoods?

2. Get someone to reinstall the cooker and hood with some sort of soundproofing. Would this be possible? Does anyone know how this could be done?

3. Replace the existing wall-mounted hood with a ceiling-mounted hood.

4. Reconstruct the whole kitchen so that the cooker and hood are on the opposite wall of the kitchen to the party wall with my neighbour. I am prepared to do this if it is the only way to solve my neighbour's problem.

I would be very grateful indeed for any advice on the best way to solve this problem.

Just want to say you can move in next door to me. You sound like a very considerate neighbour.

From the options you have listed you might be best off replacing the the appliances. It depends on your budget. Websites like AO.com list the decibel (Db) rating of some appliances so you can research the most suitable.

Also, if your cooker is near a window, or you have very good ventilation, you might not need an extractor fan at all.

Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Don't be swerved away from hand painted tiles! The best way to add colour and originality (I make hand painted tiles so I may be biased). I would take the tiles to just under the bottom shelf, and up to the hod. We have had tiles behind our cooker for 21 years, and we don't find the grout staying clean a problem. By the way - I think subway tiles will look dated in a few years, as anything bang on trend tends to do.

I do love drainpipe grey but particularly love it with the contrast of white marble countertop and a white Belfast sink. With wooden countertops I love the blue greys and greys with a hint of green. Your kitchen is already looking gorgeous so maybe you'd prefer a lighter grey like Farrow and Ball French gray, lamp room gray or blue gray as the photos below. I think you can't go wrong with Farrow and Ball greys, we went for 'light gray' in our kitchen and we love it.

Also, cookers should definitely not make a noise loud enough for neighbours to hear!

I wonder if they’re fitted correctly? Or is something loose and causing vibration? Any ideas where they were before? I agree they shouldn’t be causing that much noise!

Can you take a picture of the hood and the room it’s in and where it’s vented out? Or is this just a recirculated extractor ie not externally vented? Would help with suggesting alternatives :0)

It might also be that there is no insulation between flats. You could get the wall covered with an extra layer of sound proofing plasterboard

You can purchase anti vibration mats from amazon - they are usually designed for use under washing machines and the like - but could be installed between your wall and the hood if cut down to suit .
