Reclaimed Parquet Flooring

Does anyone have experience of reclaimed parquet floors? Are they difficult to lay? What are the pros/cons vs new parquet? I'm struggling to find someone near Glasgow with the necessary skills/desire to fit a reclaimed floor. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Reclaimed parquet floors should be no more difficult to fit than a new parquet floor. I guess that not all reclaimed floors have been sanded & finished, which is not anymore of a problem either in my view.The reason being: parquet floors for a superior finish should always have a final sanding on site to even out any surface irregularities and minor height differences. If you purchased reclaimed parquet that had an old/ worn finish on you'd kill two birds with one stone by sanding and sealing at their new destination.

the sub-floor or base will be key to how it will end up. so may need prep/levelling and a really good installer - regardless of reclaimed or new

I don't know what the rest of the decor is like but parquet is perfect for this era or go for black and what tiles. Did they not also use Lino?! That could be a lot cheaper! It depends how "themed" the Art Deco style is. Maybe just go for a cheaper option floor and add geometric rugs? Or have you looked at karndean parquet floor?

This is what I've been considering for flooring. I love parquet but am worried the pattern will make the house look smaller. I prefer warm tones. The paint colour is Shermin Williams Alpaca if that helps.

A lot of folks don't realise, that one of the problems with reclaimed original, period parquet is that in the past a lot were laid on a bed of tar, which is an absolute pig to remove from the back of the planks - which needs to be done before you can even start to think about laying and the top finish - sanding etc.

If you have fully renovated and cleaned reclaimed parquet, with all of the tongues and groves in tact, then yes it's as easy to lay as new.

If the planks haven't been renovated, there's a whole world of work there, and this is probably why you're having trouble finding someone willingly to do it.

Reclaimed, unprepared parquet can be extremely cheap to buy - often being sold as is, with damaged t&g, adhered tar and old wax or varnish/dirt on the top, so an amount of it is just firewood.

That said, I believe that older parquet is of a greater depth than newer versions and good quality hard wood.

Ribena Drinker is absolutely right. But also let me add a few more info.

Firstly reclaimed parquet (herringbone) was indeed glued down with tar and those lovely period block are a nightmare to clean and install.

Blocks do not normally have tongue and groove

lovely blocks but...

a nightmare to install.

It will be practically impossible to find reclaimed parquet with existing tongue and grove, simply because T&G are glued together during installation.

Parquet blocks are normally made of pine, a softwood with a strong yellow or reddish tint once oxidises so less durable and versatile than oak. Oak blocks are available of course but are less common.

As far as reclaimed planks (long boards) are concerned, plenty are available as reclaimed pine boards that are always without T&G. They will look like the picture below

again they have to cleaned cut to size etc.

Boards my not be straight, may have too much wear and tear, may be painted with lead paint etc.

True reclaimed boards are a right pain that's why it's easier to install new products.

However, there are plenty of new boards, made of reclaimed wood, mostly oak and pine, that have that aged feel but are easy to install.
