Need help with my kitchen
Comments (16)I think this is a really nice kitchen - you've done a nice job. The only thing that is throwing it off are the two different floors in dining and kitchen area. I'd like to see the same flooring continued through both areas. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference it makes. Since you do not like the wood or the tile, perhaps a porcelain 12x24 tile would work for you. It's very durable, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Newfies scratching it and very easy to maintain. You'd could opt for one of the wood grains on the market or one made to simulate stone. I think a greyish color would work well....See MoreWooden floors in the kitchen??
Comments (20)I have to join this discussion of Hardwood in the kitchen. I am a little biased in this discussion because of being a tile contractor for almost 30 years. I have seen alot of hardwood kitchen floors. I have to give you the cons of putting hardwood in. Hardwood floors look great. As far as durability I am not sold. Hardwood floors look great when they are first put in. Depending on the traffic in the kitchen I give them about 4 to 5 years is when you see significant wear. I have seen alot of hardwood floors in kitchens with water damage. Now I know you think you wont have a leak from your dishwasher, refrigerator or a general plumbing leak. Well these things do happen and when it does the hardwood needs to be totally removed. Some times this is not so easy if the hardwood goes under the base cabinets. I am not saying do not put hardwood in the kitchen I think you should look at whats going to work for you. There are plenty of porcelain tiles that will give you the look of hardwood but give you the durability of a porcelain tile. Tile installed properly will last a long time. Hardwood will last but it will look warn to the point that it would need to be refinished at a cost around $2000.00 depending on the size of the room. I don't want to upset the hardwood floor lovers I have it all over my house except the bathrooms and kitchen. The floor is 20 years old 4 kids 2 dogs and still looks great. I am sure what ever you choose it will look great....See MoreSmall Irish kitchen needs a facelift
Comments (4)I would paint the cupboards using either annie Sloan or little greene paint. Annie sloan paint means no prep work so is quick and easy. LG is expensive but fantastic quality. Personally I would go for grey to update the kitchen. If you can I would remove the architrave/beading at the bottom of the cupboards.I would re-tile with metro tiles which you can get for £15-20 sqm. These shouldn't date and should tie in with whatever you choose when you can get the kitchen re-fitted. If you can remove the remainder of the tiles yourself it will be cheaper than having the tiler to do it. I would redo the floor with vinyl. This is easy to pick up at £10-15 sqm and presumably your floor is hard boarded already as you have Lino so this should be a cheap fix. I would also remove the hanging utensil rail and put up some vintage or industriał artwork to make it more modern. I would just paint the walls white to keep it fresh and easy to maintain as kitchens get dirty....See MoreMarmoleum vs laminate floorboards for this open plan ground floor
Comments (10)And also there is some original tile left and I was toying with the idea of tiling over that strip all the way to the wall to create a small corridor of tile as you come in the front door for the 'hallway' that once was, to add interest and a sense of separation between kitchen and hall because the door opens into the kitchen directly which isn't ideal (we had to do away with a small pocket door and partition wall there.) and then do the rest in marmoleum. Would this look weird or should I just do the marmoleum throughout?...See MoreDaisy England
