Any Help with updating kitchen greatly appreciated
Comments (7)Daylight on a rainy day in Ireland, ah. The easy thing to do is change the bulbs in the recessed fixtures to the maximum allowed. But this will not help with overall illumination because the recessed fixtures point straight down, not sideways. For that you need to add a surface mount or close to ceiling fixture, meaning new electrical work. Some recessed fixtures can be converted to pendants, by the way. Since it is so dark, I suggest painting the whole thing a nice bright white, including the laminate cabinets. There are many discussion posts on painting laminate cabinets on Houzz. I would paint the interior of the missing-doors cabinet with an oil based white paint, too, to brighten it up. Choose a white that coordinates well with the countertop, flooring and tile. The tile can be changed, of course, sooner or later. With some fiddling, you may be able to adjust the sagging cabinet doors under the sink. These are often much used. If the hinges have seen better days, replace them with identical ones, or swap them with less-used hinges, say from those upper cabinets you took down. It's an old house trick to swap worn parts with less-used parts from elsewhere. Most undersink cabinets can use a coat of white paint on the bottom shelf or Contact paper if paint is not suitable....See MoreMixing antique brass and polished chrome in the dining room & kitchen
Comments (16)What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. Also yes the room is small but that's not an issue - it is what it is and I'm fine with it!...See MoreHelp for my kitchen please.
Comments (9)Hi Mary, I'd say remove the wall tiles and replace them with a glass splashback the whole way round or have a matching granite upstand put in and simply paint the walls. Splashbacks are my favourite as they tend to add some light to the kitchen thanks to its reflective surface. Also another idea would be to play around with lighting, which is getting more and more popular in kitchens now, such as LEDs under your wall cabinets, on top of your cabinets or along the plinth. The added lighting just adds a little something special to the kitchen and more importantly it doesn't have to cost the earth either! Another lighting option could be to go with the industrial lighting craze right now and get something put right above the island which would really add character to the kitchen too! Comments (5)Hi. The kitchen looks lovely. As the windows are lower than the units I would avoid tiling or a splashback all the way round the kitchen. Maybe just either go for a decorative tiled splashback behind the hob or use a glass splashback. Keep it simple with clear/light coloured glass or look at other decorative ideas with wallpaper, art etc. Alternatively just tile that oven ŵall about a foot high, handmade metro tiles in a pale olive would look nice. I noticed you like copper so I don't know if this is an idea? It would look great against the white and work with the warm tones in the wood. https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/louises-kitchen-midcentury-kitchen-adelaide-phvw-vp~1768716 I would also add shelves. Try searching "Kitchen with shelves between windows" for ideas but I might just add 2 shelves either side of the Middle window and pop your herbs on there...See MoreSonia
