Hi it has just been brought to my attention that the floor tiles which covered the whole of our downstairs are likely to contain asbestos. I have already removed them from 3 rooms and a hallway using a shovel to get them up. Many of them cracked or broke as I removed them. I did not wear a protective mask or protective clothing and vacuumed up any dust with the regular vacuum. My children were also home whilst I did this work. Should I be concerned? Now it’s done is there anything I can do about it. I still have one more room to do at some point this year. Should I get professionals in to do it? Any advice greatly received. Thanks
hi Nicola, firstly how do you know they contain asbestos? Can you send us a picture? In any case you should get professionals to do the job also because you cannot dispose of asbestos containing products.
You really needed professionals to check if it definitely is asbestos, and if it is then you should never remove it yourself. Asbestos is relatively safe in situ but the removal creates particles that fly about and can get in your lungs. It is also illegal to put it in a skip. Removal must be done by professionals who will seal it in specialist bags and remove it from the site.
It’s difficult to accurately tell from a picture- you need to get it tested. You can buy test kit online which would set your mind at rest- until you have checked please don’t worry as you may be worrying about nothing.
Asbestos is very dangerous, you should get a professional in to carry out checks to determine if it is indeed Asbestos. You certainly should not continue removal of the tiles from the other room. I read somewhere that it takes at least 72 hours for Asbestos dust to settle so having children in the house whilst you were doing this is not good even if it isn't Asbestos dust. Research reveals that long term exposure can lead to lung disease and cancer with symptoms showing after 20 -30 years (I do hope it isn't Asbestos) One more thing i'd do is not use your hoover as if it is Asbestos, you could be re-introducing Asbestos fibres around your home.
