5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoThis is a classic case of poor design with your renovation. Part of the any design process should be to work out furniture placement, pedestrian access and traffic flow before you start building. If this had been considered beforehand then the design of the extension would have been quite different to make the living room more functional and less of a generous hallway which is too difficult to furnish well.
It is now too late to close the gate after the horse has bolted so I think your options are limited to a pair of armchairs and a coffee table.
Never underestimate the value a good designer can bring to a project and it is such a pity you didn't have one on this project. Without knowing anything about your brief or your budget I would have suggested a more creative solution such as using the existing room as a dining space as it is the right size, and easier to furnish, and making the extension a new living room, that has been designed for comfortable couch seating and TV watching. This may have ended up with a larger extension, but would have resulted in a better use of space.

Comments (56)The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Comments (4)Thank you for your comment, The fireplace looks so bare, originally there was a huge surround and I couldn't believe the size of the actual grate when it was all removed. I had wondered if I should have had the piece of granite hearth extended to the wall and built a narrow bookcase by the chair. I will definitely get a mantel. No tv yet, don't know where to put it,? Comments (9)Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? In terms of decor do you want light and neutral or dark and moody then people can suggest paint colours?...See Morebigreader

5 years agoWhy not have a look around for a small couch and coffee table and a floor lamp and a great piece of art for the wall, with minimal amount of furniture you can arrange it to look great, keeping it simple as it is an entrance to your home it could look beautiful.

5 years agoI like Siriuskey's advice to remove the cupoard doors and paint the internal section an interesting colour. I appreciate the cabinet is fairly low, but if a mirror or painting to sit over the cabinet, then a console beneath which hides the frame, this would work. Something needs to cheer up the fireplace too a painting and maybe skinny lamps.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoi don't think the space is big enough for a dining table with walking space so my suggestion is to either swop the doors on the "awkward space" to some that cover the whole space including the lower shelf (louvre doors would allow ventilation for electrical equipment and an architrave would look better without intruding into the room) or lose the doors and add an architrave with open shelves or forget the awkward space (and keep a secret storage space?) and place a shallow armoire or similar in front of the awkward space and add a pair of small armchairs in corner 2 facing the fireplace with a coffee table and tall lamp and an extra armchair under the window

5 years agoHi, after considering all advices, we would likely convert the cabinet into a bookshelf and have two armchairs at both sides of the fireplace (black round framed mirror above it) with the round jute rug underneath, as well as a piano or storage ottoman with decorative pillows at the wall facing the door, with an artpiece on that wall? This would make this room a family activity room. What do you guys think about this arrangement?
Also, for my new dining area, how to choose a rug to go under the dining table? Does it need to complement the current round jute rug we have for this family activity, in terms of its material or colour? We will have another new rug in the living area (within the newly renovated area but at the far end right corner). Thanks!
