Order of things to fix

Hey,

My wife and I are buying a new flat and we are considering changing the entire flooring of the flat, changing the old wood floor and carpets to laminated. We are also planning to re-do de kitchen and wardrobes entirely.

Our doubt is simple. Should we do the kitchen and wardrobes first, and then the flooring, or the other way around?

Kitchen first, then flooring if you’re going for laminate as you can’t install units on top of the laminate. Good luck!

Check your building paperwork first - some apartment buildings ban laminate due to its enhancement of foot fall noise, echos and general loudness ! LVT might be more considerate to your neighbours !

Hello Jen, I am so surprised that no one has mentioned vertical blinds to you? They are very much back in fashion and work beautifully in a room such as yours. They come in 3.5" veins, which mean they will fold back and tuck into each recess when fully open. They turn to let as much light in as you need and then close when you want full privacy. They will be fitted in the recess above the windows. You can either have one complete rail length or two so you have a separate section over the door. You can have what's know as a middle split, i.e: half goes left and right. Personally I would suggest one length that opens to the left, therefore leaving your door completely uncovered when open. The pulley system is very much like a roller blind and are safety fixed to the wall so children can not get caught in them. They come in a huge rang of colours and materials and better still they are very affordable. I am working with a number of new developments in Hertfordshire at the moment and these are what the clients are all asking for. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

We are moving into an old house and I love the idea of a big brass bed, or similar style. The only thing putting me off is will it squeek? I've had metal framed beds before and that has been a major problem. Is it something that wd40 can fix?

Hi Felipe always the floor first. No matter the type of floor that you are going to install, it's always a good idea to have nice flat sound floor first and then install the kitchen and furniture on top.

Good quality floors should last a lifetime and critically should outlast your kitchen. It's going to be faster for the kitchen and floor installers and the finished job will look better for years to come.

Crikey… we'd advise to go flooring last!

Our experience shows a potential lack of respect from other trades can cause damage to the new flooring. If they are decent tradesmen they will try to accommodate not damaging your new floor but you're then putting them under pressure to be careful with the new floor and, well, why do that? Why put everyone in a potential position of accidental damage?

In most cases, we would say you have more to loose than gain by going floor first.
