Help with sound coming through windows

Hi, we recently moved into a new house which has double-glazed windows. The problem is we can hear everything from outside and anyone passing can hear us talking when we are in the front of the house. Our builders claim this is normal and say the windows are fitted according to UK regulations so there can't be a problem. However, it doesn't make sense to us- we don't hear anyone elses noise and people on our street have old single glazed windows. Does anyone have any advice or a company that specialises in this? Thanks

I have this issue in my living room. Victorian terrace with bay window fitted with brand new timber double glazed windows. Thick, lined floor to ceiling velvet curtains help a bit, but I think a lot of the sound transmits from the pavement ( no front garden to speak of) up through the floor. The old boards have a lot if gaps and are on joists only a foot or so above bare earth. I reckon a carpet would help but I prefer bare boards so just turn the telly up.

I wonder if it comes through the floor with us too. It seems unlikely because we do have a front garden- a small one but enough of a space. And our house is brand new so all the floor boards and floors are new. Thick curtains will probably help us too but it doesn't go with the design of our house. Thanks for your help!

These are interior doors, right? What if you replaced the glass entirely with a wood shutter that opened and closed, then you wood be able to let light come through when you wanted, and shut them for privacy. It would also look nice. Like this: or

Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off.

I think as well as adding life to the room with a different wall colour, you need to add some textures. But you have a great base to work from - well chosen sofa, floor, fireplace, etc. Great! The colour I would suggest you use in this space is called Sedgemoor by a company called Francesca’s Paints. I know you can’t get them over there in Ireland, but I have posted a picture of a room painted in this shade - perhaps you can get Dulux to colour match if you like it? You could then add a few cushions in natural colours, like dark brown, and possibly something like this from John Lewis: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-luce-cushion/p519627?colour=Blackberry. I would also add some pattern/texture/interest into the scheme through cushions - I really love the idea of layering up a pile of these, like in the photo on the Heal’s website (also posted): http://www.heals.co.uk/content/ebiz/heals/invt/583041/583041_l1.jpg. Then another thing you could do is add a rug, I would probably go for a textured brown one like this tonal rug from Habitat http://www.habitat.co.uk/mohit-large-brown-tonal-rug-170-x-240cm/rugs//fcp-product/24124. I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.
