help!!! What floor tiles do we choose for our kitchen????

Hi there, we are building our home and are getting to the nice stage of choosing things but it is becoming a nightmare for two indecisive people. We have chosen a Cashmere framed shaker kitchen. We have bought a grey sink and like the silk granite worktops. I wanted travertine floor tiles but been talked out of them by a friend as she thinks they will be too hard to keep clean as there are 6 of us, dog, two cats and outdoor animals with lots of mud. She has suggested a grey porcelain tile for ease of cleaning and to show off the cashmere doors. We shall need to use the same tile for the entrance hall, utility and down bathroom as this is all on one floor. It is a large south facing kitchen, with exposed red brick, which makes it a bit darker. I would also appreciate advice on paint, have so far thought a similar colour to the elephants breath F&B. The kitchen has only be placed in situ and is currently out so it can be plastered. We are then ready to put the floor down and the kitchen back. The first picture is a sample of the door, the dark grey sink, silk granite top right. Then porcelain tiles and bottom are the travertine tiles. I’m not sure if the greys are a bit too light. The top one is coarse so not sure how easy to clean. Thanks in advance.

5 years agoI'm not sure the greys work with the units. The work surface and the bottom travertine look like they go. Have you considered a slate effect porcelains like Edimax Slaty which comes in three colour variations.

Comments (33)Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Comments (14)Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. I have been searching again and attached is what I am now thinking of going for. I think this tile is very neutral, should match a lot of colours, is warm and easy to keep. 5 years agoI agree with your friend that travertine will be a nightmare to keep clean - too many nooks and crannies for dirt to nestle into! I love porcelain tiles, they are tough and so easy to clean, quick hoover and a mop. I have them in a dark grey slate look a like In my kitchen. They come in so many forms from wood effect through to all the stone effect finishes. Worth going to a good tile store and have a good look around. Bring the door with you so you can colour match.
i think any of the F&B beige neutrals will look good on the walls. I particularly Purbeck Stone and Skimming Stone. I’m not sure if grey is right with the cashmere doors, you need something warmer perhaps?
