I quite like the fireplace surround, you could paint the back wall behind if you are looking at updating the room a bit.

Is your fire place already painted and you're trying to figure out just what that paint color is? If this is the case there are several ways to do this. First if you have a good eye for color, you can get a number of multi-shade paint cards and try to match it. Another method and one I prefer is to take a small flake (about the size of a quarter) of the paint to a good paint store and have it scanned matched.

You say you plan on having a toy area under the window. I suggest that which ever color of paint you choose for the hallway, make sure it can be washed easily. Children are hard on hallway walls.

I like you had an unpainted fireplace and was undecided whether to paint it or not
I after two years painted it farrow all elephants breath it completely transformed the room made it brighter and more relaxing so yes to painting from me

I would only say to keep it because of the wood pieces you have either side and it ties in with those.
I would then paint behind it as bubbles suggested to make it more of a feature wall.

I do like painted surrounds but it depends on the look you are going for.

Thanks for your comments. I really wanted to lighten the room a bit - maybe paint fire surround white and get new mirror for over fireplace? I find it really difficult to visualise what it will be like and am worried that I won’t like it when I’ve painted it. And then I’m stuck with it!!

I would not paint, it goes good with wooden furniture in your room. I would replace the mirror with wall art.

Think twice before you paint it white because white will make it stand out. A pale grey or mushroom would possibly be better, especially if you are going to paint the wall behind a slightly darker neutral in the same tone range. You could paint your mirror frame the same colour

I wondered about painting it grey as I have grey wooden curtain poles. Would that be a better option? Carpet and sofas are grey and walls painted in Dulux Just Walnut. Don’t really want darker colour on chimney breast though.

Does that maybe look too dark? I realise it doesn’t go with the mirror either! Totally confused now- definitely need some help. Anyone else have any suggestions?

If you're going to paint it then personally I would go with a darker colour as the tv competes with the wood for attention ATM. If you change your mirror I would go for something round or roundish to break up the lines in a metal finish. Alternatively leave the wood or paint it a warm white and paint the alcoves a darker colour to disguise the tv

More help needed please! I think we’re going to leave the surround as it is as that seems to be the majority opinion. But we’re going to get a new mirror - I’m thinking a round one as suggested by Minnie but need some help choosing one.
Any suggestions please?!

I would paint. Think a light grey suits the Georgian style.

Is painting still the minority opinion or have I redressed the balance?

You could always paint the wall behind in F & B Elephants Breath to compliment your carpet, sofa and curtains (like the picture) and paint the wood in a soft white like Pointing F &B. Have you considered painting the other furniture or having it sprayed professionally -it gives it a really hard wearing finish and it would completely update the room. You could then choose a white ornate mirror or maybe a gold as you have brass on your fire surround. The gold star burst mirrors look stunning if you like that sort of look.

Your fire surround looks really nice painted and updates the whole look. I have used Elephants Breath on walls and had furniture sprayed. It’s such a versatile colour. It’s good to see the before and after to see what a difference paint can make.

Changed my mind now after seeing before and after photos! Fire surround painted in elephants breath looks lovely. Really like the calm and relaxing look. Would mine look ok painted if I left other furniture as it is? Think I have too much wood to paint everything and don’t have the budget to buy new. Seems to be about equal now between painting or not painting so I think I’m more confused than ever! Thanks for all your comments though.
