grey plaster skim walls?

Just wondered if anyone has had a grey plaster skim wall done and kept it as a finished surface ie no paint??

As the plasterers can get a really polished effect when they skim (told they try and avoid this normally as paint doesnt stick to it as well) , i thought it would be great to have it done in the grey tone as they used to use.

Anyone recommend a product? And does it look good when done?

Not very knowledgable on plaster finishes but I deffo wouldn’t be getting any finish that would render it had to paint in the future!

@Jayme Hobbs .. thanks a mil Jayme I had been looking at a light grey colour but was afraid it might end up looking just whitewashed but I love the wall paint in the pic. @eagledzines.. I've attached the closeup of the counter, will look into changing the handles just to give the cabinets a lift. @Dannielle Lyn... Has anyone used farrow & ball slipper satin with skimming stone & charleston grey? We are using skimming stone on perimeter units which is in L-shape and charleston grey on island with 'lagoon' silestone worktop in our new kitchen. House is a new build and very well lit, we have windows/sliding door on three sides of room. Apologies no photos as not installed yet. We have all lower units apart from two tall press areas to integrate fridge, cooker etc into and one wall hung press as didn't want to crowd wall. Also looking at wimborne white in F&B and Subtle in Colourtrend brand. Ideally would like a good neutral that would work throughout a large part of house if possible. Not too grey or cream. To be honest I would be very careful with grey or anything with grey tones. We moved house last July and painted our lounge in FB elephants breath. In the north facing room it was very grey and sucked the life out of the room. We had to change it - very depressing. We have now used a paint from Little Greene - the paint quality is so much better than FB. Our decorator agrees. They might have a nice grey - but please be very sure of how it will look in your room!

Hi. I've seen you're doing the living room in elephants breath. Why not continue this on the "kitchen"ŵall for some contrast with the cabinets and to keep the arch the same colour and then do the rest in skimming stone to keep it light. I don't think you need to go mad on accessories, you already have green in both rooms. Why not move the purple dish onto the island and add a ceramic vase and potted herb etc. for the table add a vase of good quality faux flowers in soft white with some really deep purple and some green foliage.

It wouldnt be impossible to paint- its just the shiny finish that might need a dull down to help the paint stick ;0)

Tbh, wouldn’t be for me and I like the raw type finishes, the thing that would put me off is any type of sheen, all my paints are as Matt as I can get, only speaking for myself though :-)

Yes i like matt paint.
I think the idea of the natural polished finish is that its easier to keep clean and dust free.

Doesnt have to be a polished finish anyway - im really just trying to find out if anyone does a grey finish rather than the pink.

Thanks @Minnie - im not keen on the pinky colour though and it might clash with the brickwork, ha ha.

Yes i came across that one - was worried it might cost a fortune as i presumed it was made for high useage areas - commercial wise. Im thinking of having the grey on the ceiling rather than having to paint it white - but i will try and find a plasterer to ask. Was hoping one would see my post ... ;0)

I have emailed that company to ask them. Not sure if anyone else makes plaster or if its just british gypsum...

Interesting. I would have thought only darker colours possible due to the pink tone (to be able to cover it)
Will investigate those, thank you.

Only trouble is the plasterer isnt that savvy so its finding someone who is good and also willing to experiment! LOL

There are some more tips on here. I was going to use tadelakt in my ensuite until I discovered harsh cleaning products can't go near it which would be an issue with the shower door! Anyway try googling polished plasterers or tadelakt in your area. Admittedly I'm not a million miles from London but was amazed to find 2 local plasterers that can do it, you may find they have a lot more expertise in different wall finishes. You would hope it's quite easily achievable though!

Good luck, I think it could look great! i must admit I love the colour of dried plaster but i think a grey could look great too :)

I am lucky minnie101 - builder brother, plumber nephew, plasterer stepson and my other stepson has his own stone and tiling company! I can’t remember putting my living room on F&B haha!

Hi Tani, my stepson says Venetian Plaster is a product that comes in many colours and finishes, eg marble effect, and it does have a polished look. Hope this helps.

Yes, Venetian plaster, quite a specialist technique and quite expensive, I think. Friend has it in their downstairs loo, does look fab

Sounds like you want a polished plaster finish, it is quite a specialist thing and not all plasterers will be able to do it properly, it is also more expensive than a standard plastered wall, as is always the way with the nicer things! I can recommend a guy if your London based

Ah I’m ‘up north’ unfortunately.
Not set on a polished finish but just want a plain, fairly non descript grey plaster finish really. Can be a bit raw but just worried about the water and tide marks from the finish.

Hi Tani,

We recently finished a project where we left the plastered walls unfinished and it had a lovely grey troweled effect. I agree with the other commenters the Polished plaster is beautiful and we often use it in bathrooms, but it is quite expensive.

The plaster we used was ThistlePro DuraFinish:

If you scroll down this story to the bedroom picture the designers decided it was much cheaper to use a wallpaper instead of polishing the plaster. I’ve also seen online DIY paint effect tutorials to get this look. Apparently “Rough Luxe” and “Distressed Glamour” are the interiors terms for this kind of look!

Brilliant, thank you. Its more for the ceiling as its vast and i really cannot be bothered to paint it. LOL.
Will check that blog out though as i like the rough lux theme. Im not all out industrial and like a bit of a mix in there as well.

I came across Tadelakt in a Riad in Marrakesh a while ago. It is a smooth unpainted plaster that is waterproof as well. I remember thinking it could look nice in a contemporary setting.

something interesting...

british gypsum called me back to say that the colour of the plaster depends where you are located is where it is mined. apparently it’s grey ‘Oop North’ and ‘pink’ down south! so she advised me to check with my local supplier about finding a local mined plaster which for us, should be grey.

will update if i have any luck! LOL.

i’m not holding my breath as Jewsons said its not on the packet so although it should be grey, it doesn’t say. then he said it could be a light pinky tone grey - arghhhh. pink isn’t grey, LOL. so no idea.

will have a word with the potential new plasterers i think and pass all the info off this thread to them in the hope they can do it.

Hi Tani,

That's a shame, Tani.

I'm doing a plastering course in January (if you want a job doing...) so I'll ask the tutor what they think. I plan on doing my bedroom with a grey plaster...hopefully!
