Fitted walk in wardrobe ... depth? waste/useful?

Hello all
My plan is to have fitted wardrobes the full width 3.5m of the master bedroom (6m x 3.5m)
Initial plan is purely fitted wardrobes.
However on Houzz I’ve seen fitted wardrobes with a slight walk way in front - making them a walk in wardrobe. What is the best depth for these? Are they worth it? What do you do with this gap? Or is it better to have that space in your room?
