Paint Design Dilemma Hallways

How do I get paint that looks like the grey in these lower walls?

Hello everyone,

I have a Victorian house with exactly the same dimensions as the one in the photo above and would love to copy the colour scheme. I am having a lot of trouble finding paint that looks like the grey on the doors, radiator store and the lower walls.

Can anyone please give me advice on how to find that colour of grey paint?

Thank you so much everyone for your help. In the end, I went with the Farrow and Ball downpipe (thanks for confirming it @minnie101).

Here's a few photos of how my corridor looks so far. Still a bit of work to go but I'm really happy with the progress so far. Thanks again everyone!

I’d take the image to a store that offers mixing paint. If the staff are professional enough they should be able to help you.

Possibly Farrow and Ball "Green Smoke" but it's also about the sheen level. The higher the gloss level the darker a colour will appear. Take the photo to a decent paint store and it can be scanned to colour match. Hope this helps?

I agree deepen the color, don't change it and yes art art art! maybe lessen the presence of the brick with the earlier suggestion of the metal cogs its and use traditional artwork pics/nature/paintings on the painted wall. I also like the idea to paint the part of the wall that juts out in a darker shade of the same color. Now you have lots to consider and lots to dismiss as well. Good luck and have fun

Hi---ok, so you have some different styles going on, but I think it could come together-just needs some balance with color, pattern, and a touch of whimsy... :) The wallpaper (w/owl) is a good color to incorporate into the space-works well with the sectional, dining table, and floor. The art pulls the color palette together, is contemporary with organic/circular shapes---relates to both the sectional and table designs. Pillows-masculine and feminine balanced-color palette repeated. Check BM's Seattle Mist and Brushed Aluminum for wall color. Hope this is helpful. I love your room, but it isn't done! Find some jazzy art to hang over the fireplace in vibrant colors. Select a major and minor color from the art work and add pillows, and 3 accessories that are LARGE to place on three places in the book shelves. If you like what you see at that point you are probably done, but if not then I think a glass and steel cocktail table round or oval would add sparkle, interest, and function to your room.....it really looks nice.

Lovely colour, but the problem with a photo is it may not be true to real life. I think if you look at Farrow & Ball or Little Green Co paints you may find similar. Their paints always look really good in a period home. It looks a bit like F&B Plummet or Downpipe?

First door is Plummet, second is Downpipe.

Looking at it I think it may be a Little Greene paint rather than Farrow and Ball. Little Greene do a really good range so I would look at theirs first.

Thanks for the advice so far! I looked at the Farrow and Ball make and they do have a great range. @James the "Green Smoke" doesn't look quite the same to me, but it helped me to find "Inchyra Blue" which is said to appear grey, blue or green to different people in different lights which sounds interesting. Do you think that would give me something similar to the photo? I'm a total amateur so could be completely wrong.

@forzaitalia I absolutely love the "Downpipe" colour. Perhaps that with a "Modern Emulsion" will will help the blue come through too? It's incredible how the door in your photo looks so different from the colour on their website. I love it in your photo, but not so much in theirs.

I think that I'll pop to a local Farrow & Bell shop today and have a good look around. This is not easy, but fun to learn!

Have a look at little Greene Livid. It looks different depending on the aspect. In my lounge which gets a yellow east light it looks more blue so the aspect makes a difference.

Just done a bathroom in Wild Mushroom Satinwood from Dulux, doors and woodwork, very very close to that colour. Check it out.

@colourhappy thanks for the advice. I just had a look through the range and thought that maybe "Scree" (https://www.littlegreene.com/paint/colour/grey-paint-colours/scree-227) would be a possible too.

My corridor is south facing and gets lots of light. Do you think that would give "Livid" more of a blue look like I'm looking for?

@scalpman do you have a link please? I looked it up on the dulux site and there's Wild Mushroom 1-6. Which one did you use please?

Wow Livid looks an almost perfect match! I’ve used Little Green eggshell paints and they are so nice to use. If you have a Brewers near you they do the full range.

Do you think that I should go for a mid level gloss for the walls themselves and then a higher level gloss for the door, skirting boards and trim along the wall?

Hi Kris, I would paint the woodwork in eggshell and the walls in matt emulsion, but then I don’t like high gloss paint. Little Greene do the eggshell in water based (low VOC’s) and oil (high VOC’s but can give you a headache and oil smells). Personal preference!

I use a program called pipette, https://www.sttmedia.com/pipette-download and you can find the colour composition of any image ie rgb, cmy etc, its also the true colour of the image and not how your screen presents it. Obviously with a photo this won't be the actual colour and also with a photo the colour changes in different parts of the photo. You could then download colour charts and use pipette to see which colour is closest to the photo results or do a search on line for the #hex colour, you can try encycolorpedia.com and that gives you a list of paints that are close to it.
