Place a large throw over the sofa- a neutral tone or one that ties in with your wall colour will make it less dominant particularly if it is a dark sofa
Would love to see a picture of the sofa and it's location - but without seeing it , here are a couple ideas: if you want it to appear smaller I think playing around with the side tables/lamps and art work (or maybe window treatments) behind the sofa will help. Since you can not change the size of your sofa, it's all about getting the proportions of everything around the sofa just right. And I agree, a throw and some large cushions will help too.
