Design Dilemma Dining Rooms Living Rooms

Small Living and Dining room design

Hi wondering if anyone can help. I have a very small living and connecting dining room. I need design and furniture arrangement ideas. 3 adults and 2 dogs in the house. I can start from scratch, furniture, flooring etc can and will be replaced.
I have photos and a floor plan but would someone be able to explain how I can upload or attach to my post. I can't find the option.

That is a narrow space to work with. Ever thought of refilling in that archway between the lounge and dining room and opening up the kitchen to the dining area?
If that's not possible I'm sorry but I think your fireplace would be best removed. Maybe pop a wall mounted ethanol one that takes up hardly any space. Maybe a corner lounge in the front left corner and a single armchair in the walkway. check the depth of the lounge, you don't want aything too deep as it's eating into your floorspace. Wall mount the TV. Slim shelves for books etc on the same wall.
The table would benefit from a bench seat on one side. So when you are not needing all four sides of the table you can push the table back against the wall with the bench under. Remove the bookcase, add a rug under the table and one under the sofa area.
Overall just think slim furniture, check your measurements when shopping. I bought a well priced sofa from IKEA, it's deep and comfy but the back is slim and works well in my small lounge.
Lastly, keeping as much off the floor really helps to make the place feel larger. So a sofa with legs on show, wall mounted shelves etc. and the old trick of a mirror can really help.

I want to design a whole section of my house. It involves knocking walls etc. but when finished I will be left with a space 20 ft wide x 16.5 ft long leading off a living room & separate corridor to a garden. Room height will be 8ft. Currently there is a window & sliding patio door, but ideally I would like to replace with an entrance (nothing fancy) & glass wall or bi-fold doors. Very rough sketch of the space attached.

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
