What are the most important design considerations for a Self-Build?
Comments (11)Hi Michele, self build is very exciting and we wish you luck for your upcoming project. We have various tips when it comes to our customers designing their home. As some have suggested above understanding how you and your family occupy the space is fundamental in making those early design decisions. We also tell self builders to put 'wants and needs' into 3 columns, must have, nice to have and luxury. Comments (4)White goes with anything. We have a high gloss white handleless kitchen from Crown but the good thing is that our kitchen decor can always be updated. Walls can literally be painted any colour and it will go, same with wallpaper and even changing the worktops. Comments (7)Dear Éilíse Sullivan, the mahogany wardrobe looks like a great project! The image is too small for me to see the details of it; it looks like has glass/metal door at the top part and design details on the draws. If you send me a better quality image and with the door closed I can visualised it for you in any other colour you like if it helps. Replacing part of the furniture (glass) with solid panels covered in wall paper or fabric, using decoupage for the inside of the drawers or muted colours on the outside and brights on the inside ... are all possibility depending in which room you want to place it and what you are going to use it for. Are you going to do it for yourself, just for fun or to sell/present? I would paint the back panel in a darker colour, also the inside of the wardrobe part and all the horizontal and vertical straight lines to frame the different units: draws, 'open shelf' cabinet at the top and door. I would go for wall paper on the inside of the draws, something sympathetic with the darker tone on the back panel ... the handle can stay or be replaced (I need a closer look); they can really give a wist to the furniture if changed. For the choice of colours ... it really depend on where it goes and what you want to do with it. The room's images you posted are quite different in style. You could try to 'blend' the piece in to the room's design scheme by choosing complementary colours or go the opposite and bring in a bold statement. I like bold statements! Comments (32)Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great....See More

5 years agoThank you everyone, yes Carolina, it is the issue of having the end panel run all the way to the floor between the base units. The other base units will not have anything between the doors.
I was wondering if I could stop the end panel at worktop or base unit level but I'm worried it will look like we didn't plan it and had to cover the sides of the tall units as an afterthought. On this kitchen they have stopped it at the plinth rather than going all the way to the floor.
