Making a small living room homely

Hi all,

I'm in the processes of doing up my home. I've recently repainted and now I'm looking at furniture and accessories to bring in to life.I have a small living room (14.4 x 10.6) and my plans are;

- replace sofa with a midnight blue velvet 3 seater with footstall (image of something I have my eye on attached)

- 2 scaffold plank shelves for the alcove to the left of the fireplace (over the table). This will have pictures a lamp and gold accessories

- floor lamp will go in the corner next to the window

as having a 3 seater will mean I have more room

My questions to you all are;

1. I feel the room is too wood heavy. Should I paint something? Or even get rid of something?

2. I need a table, but I feel it takes over. Thoughts?

3. I'd like a rug, but not sure if a rug on a carpet will look good

4. Will the sofa I have my eye on go?

5. What else can I do to give this room some life?

Thanks in advance
