Painting beams with wall paint?

I've started painting these beams with eggshell paint but it's taking forever, and the ceiling needs painting too! If I put primer on them, do you think I could use emulsion paint on the beams and ceiling? Would save so much time!

Egg shell is great for protecting against chips if you hit the painted surface with the vacuum and is wipe clean if you get finger prints on them. Personally I don’t think you need extra hard wearing paint on the ceiling and the emulsion will be great.

I painted my kitchen three years ago, and I love it. It's hard work and can take some weeks to do. You need to take doors off, remove the hinges and handles. Remember you need to prime and paint two coats on each side, so for a door that equates to six coats of paint and letting each coat dry. I used Mylands of London paint, I'm just hooked on this paint as the eggshell is dead flat with only 8 percent sheen, you wont get another paint any flatter. And if the paints good enough for Downtown Abbey, then it's good enough for us. I would hold back on painting wall tiles, as they are white and look fine , paint the cupboards first and see what it looks like. I choose Myalnds paint and had the colour mixed in a farrow and ball blue green. See photos. Good luck Yvonne

I have picked Farrow and Ball Oval Room blue paint for the walls which is really nice with the curtains and 2 couches. Should I paint the inbuilt cupboards and shelves all the same colour or keep them neutral? Also the room has uplighting all around it. Should I just do the walls in blue or continue it under and up the side of the uplighting coving?? Decision, decisions, thanks for the help!

I wouldn’t use anything but emulsion on a ceiling. It will be perfect. I’ve never painted beams but as Jonathan states, nobody is going to be chipping that paint! Good luck.

We painted our traditional black beams in F&B Smoked Trout, but it took 5 layers - 2 x stain/colour block coats, 1 x F&B Undercoat and then 2 x F&B Smoked Trout in the dead flat finish. Looks great but by the time he'd finished it, the OH said never again!

Given the choice I'm sure he would have preferred to have slapped on some of the ceiling white emulsion, but the dark black colour kept bleeding through. If the beams have started out in a light colour, I'd certainly give emulsion a go.

If they were darker or the traditional black colour, I think you may find you'll have bleed-through problems which will make the beams discoloured against the white ceiling. The giant beam in our bedroom took 3 coats of colour block/stain and two of satin.

They look awesome! Our beams were really dark brown but painted rather than stained, and I've already put two coats of eggshell on them, so hopefully I won't have any bleed through?
