design dilemma !
hi all, I have posted a couple of times about this Tom and it's getting there slowly. we have plastered over a monstrosity of a rock wall and fire place. eventually we will put a fireplace in though this will be in a few years. Please can you advise how to decorate this wall. The picture of the window is opposite this wall and I was going to use the same wallpaper. I also thought shelves in the alcove.
do you think a mirror on this wall would work?

Comments (17)I personally like the kitchen, kind of a Scandinavian modern look. leave the skirts, doors and trims as is. Paint wise, I am going to invite you to a kitchen gallery that I think works well with the existing aesthetic you have now. I like the "Melrose Kitchen" in this instance, as an example of wall color. Comments (10)Thank you all for replying and for your advice! I will certainly consider changing the lamps for taller ones. They are very low all right. General feeling seems to be that mirror would be better same colour as the fireplace so I will think about that (it was originally that colour but I thought it looked very dark LOL). Comments (0)Hello everyone! I would love some advice on how to design the kitchen in our new build. As you can see from the design there is a long 4 m window at the front of the house. This will be quite low and will be 50 cm high, so basically it will act a bit as a splash back. So my question is: can I fit in 4 tall cabinets in the kitchen (1 for oven- 60 cm, 2 as pantry - 60 cm each and 1 for the fridge-80 cm)? I am starting to think I need to shorten that window as I would like the keep the feel of the kitchen bright and airy with an island with seating without over crowding the space and not blocking the passage into the living room on the left? I can see you have a lounge through the gap at the rear. It's an odd layout as it just looks like a big room that's a walk through to the 'real' lounge.
With the large openings at either end and no door up, it doesn't help with that 'just going through here to somewhere else feel.'
It's a bit large to be a dining room on it's own and if it was, the table and chairs are a little too small. I presume you are going to put doors in the openings? Maybe not the one to the lounge area, but definitely the one going to the hallway.
It certainly can be a lounge / diner, with the other room as a snug. and it will look more like that, when you can't see the other room with the sofa's in it.
I wouldn't do anything with the Fireplace at all, you're still getting there with the project, and these things take time. I think the sofas are too near to the fireplace, and need to come back quite a bit. When you replace them, maybe you could just have armchairs and pull the dining table away from the other wall too.
By having armchairs near the fireplace, you will free up the space for the dining table to come away from the opposite wall and to sit under the pendant lamp. The walk way from the door is then along where the dining table is now. Weirdly ( and we're all different ), that would be the biggest annoyance for me, the table not being directly under the light fitting.
If you then swap to armchairs in the contrasting blue / teal it will soften down all the brown tones
For now as it's going to be a fireplace i'd give the impression of one by standing a gold coloured fire guard on the hearth.A rug will help too.
However, I know that the sofas are going eventually, but they're too big for the space, so you'll just have to bear all of this in mind for when you can replace them. To be fair, there are some great bargains around on the local facebook pages and Ebay, so no harm window shopping, you never know what you can pick up for very little. It's one of my favourite things to do................getting a bargain is way better than going to a shop and handing over money..............it's an achievement.
If it were me, because you already have the sofa area behind, I would get rid of the two sofas and leave the area free until you can get the armchairs. I rather like the blue armchairs, they even go with the colours in the fish tank.Helen Kennedy
