Quick Q - what is F&B 'Off Black' like??

Tani H-S

from my other F&B kitchen unit colour thread, I'm also just trying out the Off Black sample which I bought but hadn't tried so far as presumed it would be too black .

Has anyone used this on their kitchen units?? Is it more grey black and softer than say the blue/black??

Bumping this thread as just got the Off Black sample back from the kitchen company (which I decided to go with as it's a deep neutral grey) and my supplier said it looks blue. Obviously the maker has matched the RAL colour code to the F&B paint and for some reason, it's come out blue. Or, they have just done a sample of Railings by mistake and thought it was Off Black!!

So I need to ask if anyone else has had Off Black made up (not F&B paint as this should stay the same colour) and did it come out more blue??

I wonder if it’s blue black? However even a dark blue will look black a lot of the time. I think this sounds striking and could be very successful sitting very comfortably against blacks you already have in other furniture

Cuprinol paint in B&Q comes in a nice olive sage green looks very nice. I painted my bench with it and looked really good. Also comes in brighter colours - like a blue if you want it to stand out for the right reasons!

Hi! I had a quick look through the Houzz pics (imaginatively, under 'beige wardrobes'!) and most seem to be shades of coffee, caramel etc to tone with the wardrobes. I've attached some of the pics. One included a blue as an accent, which looked lovely if you're feeling brave! Alternatively, is the an option for taking off one or two of the doors, so some storage was open? I appreciate that's not ideal when you've paid for new doors, but might be a way of breaking up the colour, which might make it easier for you to enjoy? Final alternative: photo magnets are available in quite cool little squares. You could use sepia tones and arty images and use that to break up the panels, if you really hate them. I would guess, though, that with some room tweaks and time, you'll feel happier with them! Fingers crossed :) Good luck xx

Hello Duncan, They are good and I am biased as I don't use companies that don't provide trade discount... as I usually like to help my clients out... Here's a few images and an edging on a runner can be lovely too... I have also included one of a painted stair... So you have an option all of which are rather striking.... : )) x http://www.naturalrugstore.co.uk/coir-rugs.asp?gclid=Cj0KEQjwiKS3BRCU-7XQ75Te3NoBEiQAA2t_xPmcwAZ3TS0Qhq1t1hzYsP-r8oFgdC385qXO88eXioYaAjCE8P8HAQ The painted one... I would include the banister in this scenario..

My supplier have a paint mix shop as well and said on their system it shows no blues in it either so I think they have made a mistake and done the wrong sample and they are going to check it in the morning with the paint mix company (so they didn’t use the original F&B colour it turns out)

But, I did say to her that if it’s darker than Railings and a deeper blue then it might be great! Ha ha ha

This is the colour sample I got:-

    (The small bright cobalt one!!)

It’s supposed to be F&B off black :0 and is nothing like it. Not even a v dark navy which would have been ok. Looks really bright. LOL.

Screens are often bad at showing the colour properly since on mine it looks black at first glance with a dark blue undertone when looking more closely.
But at least you are getting proper samples that you can try against the other elements in the room. Btw I had railings mixed for my exterior and have a section of farrow and ball next to it and the dulux version is almost identical. And I do love railings, I’m now repainting hall in it so have it inside and out and everything looks good against it.
    Anyhow good luck

I meant to say that the small dark blue sample is supposed to match the grey one above it! That’s why I’m saying it’s nowhere near the same colour, ha ha.
I did the top grey in the matt finish and then the darker grey next to it is with a satin top coat on.
F&B off black has no blue or green tones in at all (I checked) yet the kitchen peoples version was a cobalt navy.

Been thrashing it today and trying to get other samples done (which they charge £60 for - I thought I would get at least half a door size sample for that, LOL!)
But now it means the kitchen will be delayed as it can’t be ordered until the colour is sorted.

Another alternative- besides choosing a different kitchen - is to have it delivered primed and for me to paint it myself (eek) Only the doors and fillers and some side panels ... but I don’t know if it will look naff.

This wall is off black - it’s very dark and very neutral. I was ocd about it not having a ‘tone’ to it! Hope this is helpful!

Also mine was not F&B but leyland paint colour matched to it.

I’d suggest painting your colour samples on plain lining paper as it looks like you’ve painted on a grey/beige which will distort your perception of the colour. From your photo, the smaller block with the wood grain looks much closer to off black than the paint on the wall.

I orderd FBrailings in the ICAN paint because theyre meant to be environmentally friendly and super durable. In the meantime Ive had my kitchen delivered primed to paint and a painter is coming round tomorrow.I am a bit of a control freak but this but at least I can see if i like the outcome early enough. It does however mean we need to have a dust free space which is no small ask with building work ongoing.

@Clairetaz - the samples were all done on wood and the lighter grey is actually off black straight from the pot onto wood.
It’s not going on a wall - but onto kitchen cabinets and they would have a grey primer on first ;0)

My issue I’ve posted is that the kitchen company have matched the off black but their version is completely blue - with no hint of black or grey at all. So it’s nothing like off black at all (not even on the same colour chart kind of close) LOL..

@iyanini oo do let me know how the painter gets on! I would be painting it myself (eggshell?) so there is a lot of work. Would have to take all the doors off so set up some sort of large table to paint them all on. Dust is indeed an issue though (tent inside the house?? Lol)

Let me know how long it takes them as well? Really helpful to know

I’m sorry for being dumb but are you saying the top large piece of the three sample boards is meant to be off black but is in actual fact turned out cobalt? On my screen that looks like a silvery grey!

@Emily ha ha, yes they are indeed off black! Lol. To be fair - I took the photo when it was drab yesterday so will take another one this morning in hopefully better light ;0) But yes, the blue sample is nothing like them at all.

The left side is matt and the right side looks v dark grey/black where I’ve added a satin coat over it. I didn’t prime the wood though on that big board.

Lol. Erm - that large grey piece of wood in the background has one coat of off black painted on. Then I put a top coat of satin on half of that piece of wood which made the off black really dark. It’s to represent the eggshell as the eggshell is much darker than a matt paint.

That little square of wood placed below it is the sample the kitchen company sent me that is supposed to be their match to Off Black. However, I’m saying that it arrived completely blue. I put it next to the other piece of wood to show a comparison.

You can’t see much of the blue tone on the small square as the light is still grey here today so no sun - but it’s much brighter blue than on the picture. The two greys below the blue piece is the Off Black done as a matt and eggshell finish. Hope that explains it a bit better. I know it’s hard when it looks like there are extra colours in the pic I’ve not explained properly :0)

Yay - managed to get a better pic of the sample they sent me - shows the blue now, ha ha

So this is nothing like Off Black at all

Gosh. Been searching f and b off black and it looks like it’s very unpredictable to me! Like I’ve said I’ve got a dulux Raillings match inside and out although light and shade do have an effect it’s quite predictable and makes sense such as it looks darker indoors and you can see the blue a bit more in direct sun etc. Even the different paint finishes don’t distort the colour too much and I’m sure if a put a varnish over railings emulsion it wouldn’t change any way near as much as your off black sample. Tbh Tani it would make me really nervous using off black given the pics I’ve now seen and also your pics.

@Emily - the sample they sent me is completely wrong so don’t worry about the blue tones. Off black is made up of black, but of white and beige (apparently) on the replica system. There should be no blue in it whatsoever, ha ha.
I even double checked with F&B themselves!

Yes it comes up as a mid grey on the mdf board so on a less absorbing background and a couple of coats, it would be darker anyway (like the wall picture that was posted a few comments back)
It’s just a softer black which looks dark grey in the sun which is what I wanted.

So we are back to the drawing board now with the makers trying to get them to send us some of their dark grey copy samples. If they won’t do it then I either have to buy the kitchen and paint it myself (urgh) OR, choose a different kitchen and wait until the new year for it to be fitted. (Rolls eyes)

I just skimmed through the previous thread about off black v blue black and re read colour harpy’s comments. And I totally get what she’s saying, I had painted my hall in Pelt and I just knew something was wrong with it and have now redone it in raillings. And the mid wood tone karndean floor now looks a hundred times better and so far any other colour I’ve put in there looks better and somehow cleaner too. I love Pelt though! And I don’t know why it didn’t work. I feel bad bringing this up, don’t want to make you uncertain but tbh I think you are already uncertain. I was thinking it doesn’t matter too much which one of your options you pick since they would all look good but now not so sure. Sorry Tani!! Gosh my finger has been hovering over the post button for ten minutes! Oh bum I’m posting.

Ha ha, harpy! (Wish they had emojis on this forum!!)

    - yes I wouldn’t have minded if it had been a really dark rich blue but it’s not and i didn’t want a bright blue kitchen so back to the drawing board. It’s more annoying the unwillingness of the supplier to sort it out quickly as they are obviously so busy with Xmas orders that they can’t be bothered (not my local kitchen company I might add - it’s the ones they order the units off!). Shame really. Anyway, I’m going to see my kitchen guys today to see what else they have . Just in case ;0)

Hi tani, that is nothing like what you ordered! It’s so blue! Sorry can help in your choice but you’ll know when its right for you, just wondering, when you say ‘paint it yourself’ mind me asking what way your doing it? I’ve sprayed a fair bit of stuff and it’s a big job and I’ve specialise gear for going it! I’d be worried about hand painting anything flat surface, esp anything more than a Matt finish.
  • Emily
I actually like a hand painted finish that’s not factory “flat” if you know what I mean.
Personally I would love iyaninis solid kitchen hand painted in one of the glorious intense colours. If you’re a good painter then I think it would be enjoyable and give great satisfaction. So hope you can make the space work somehow for Christmas even if you don’t get kitchen in.

Thank you. Yes I like hand painted as well as it works with the industrial theme and I’m not keen on a factory flat finish unless it’s very contemporary.
Lots of choices then but I have until next Thursday I think now to make a decision.

They are sending a sample of pitch black to see how that arrives. If it comes as Blue then there is a fault with their machine, ha ha ha

The OH sprayed our kitchen cabinets with a professional spray gun, but he did have all of the proper specialist masks and protective clothing etc.

He set up a spray booth - inside while the kitchen was being remodelled and then outside in a gazebo once the kitchen had the flooring done. The finish was excellent and where we've needed to touch up, he's just done it with slightly watered down paint on a sponge or brush. We've rollered and brushed units before and spraying gives by far the best finish and soooooo much quicker.

We went for F&B Oval Room Blue - the reason being the F&B paints are perfect for use with a spray gun, whereas a lot of "matched" paint doesn't spray as well and clogs the gun.

Doesn't the kitchen manufacturers have a standard colour you like or could you choose a RAL colour you like. Alternatively, wouldn't the manufacturers just paint it with F&B paint for you?

  • Tani H-S

I’ve asked them if they do standard ral colours and waiting on a reply. It’s awkward as my kitchen company don’t know who their suppliers paint supplier is (otherwise they would liaise direct!) it’s hard work, lol.

F&b paint would probably cost triple what they can do it for but I’m honestly quite flexible on the tone - as long as it was a dark grey. How hard can that be (rolls eyes!)

Did you guys try painting on a wood grain door though or flat? I would always spray paint a flat door
