Wallpaper or Paint??

I was going to wallpaper both alcoves before the open shelving goes in, tv to be in alcove to the left of fireplace. The fireplace will be white brick half way up to mantle. I was going to use a funky Cole & Sons or similar paper but am thinking it might be a bit much on those two walls and with tv to be placed in front of it?
Soooo... opinions would be really helpful!

Shelving on one side only? Personally I would go for paint. If this is a room you use a lot then you may tire of the wallpaper and may look too fussy behind TV!! Paint is very easy to change for a different look. You can use a contrasting colour! Love the colour of your sectional.

I definitely think some colour on the walls would look great with your monochrome curtains and furniture. I would suggest a relatively soft colour, maybe a duck egg or greyish green colour, nothing too vibrant that will battle with the bold monochrome! I agree that with the strong carpet choice you don't need a patterned wallpaper. Instead consider painting the woodwork a deeper colour than the plain and pale walls for extra drama. If you particularly like the paper why not have it papered onto canvasses and hang it like pictures

Yes I was considering shelving on just one side, perhaps hanging a painting on the other. So would you paint the fireplace and leave the alcoves white? I can see where you’re coming from with regard to the wallpaper, it’s the room we are in most often so you’re probably right x

Sinead, I'm not too sure what colour you're going for on main walls...? will your selves be white? black/charcoal would have impact here so keep all walls same colour!
What storage do you have in the room? You could have bench/box seat in same colour as shelves and fabric on top in complimentary colour (e.g., same as cushions!) on RHS with picture over it!! In my house they were traditionally called "toy boxes"!

Was hoping to keep the rest of the walls white as it runs through to the kitchen which has white walls. I had considered Studio Green or Hague Blue.
Shelving was to be white but with the mantle a natural dark oak (hopefully) would they be better a similar tone?
Would the dark paint work across the alcoves and the fireplace?
