kitchen worktop help - laminate vs stone

Hi
I'm planning a new kitchen as part of a refurb and need some advice on worktops.
I have always had a laminate worktop in kitchens before and now have the chance to get a stone worktop which I have always thought would be the obvious choice given the opportunity.
However, I've been told that they can be quite noisy with dishes etc, especially in a open plan which is what we will have.
Also another person told me she wishes she'd gone with laminate because of you drop a dish on the quartz top it will surely break. ( I hadn't thought of this!)
Anyone with experience of laminate and stone in an open plan space who can offer thoughts?

aaah ! makes sense now - hey any one can grow parsley, basil or thyme ! you can buy them in pots in the supermarket when (and if) you kill them !!! my husband thinks I have green fingers because our herbs always look great !!! little does he know I replace them monthly !!! lol !! and a sprig looks great on tinned soup, that you can then claim you cooked from scratch too !!!

Well I am a very plain sort of a person and I don't like overdoing patterns. The timber in the cupboards is beautiful and I feel that bench top would detract from it. I would have as plain as possible top in a cream/beige to enhance the timber. This would give you plenty of choice of other colours in the room. I don't feel I can really comment on colours as I can't tell the aspect of your room or the lighting nor do I know what other colours you have through the house. The only downside to the cupboard doors you are considering is that they will attract dust and being in the kitchen a greasy dust.

The builder ought to be ashamed for not cleaning up each night...that is part of what my contractors do...every night. As far as flooring...since the cabinets are on the darker side...use a contrasting flooring in travertine stone. use the largest pieces you can get...usually 18" are good but if you can get 24" that's even better! Put them on the diamond. as far as backsplash use travertine again and bring in the same color as the flooring. Use a touch of contrast in the pattern like a darker liner or a motif of somekind.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.
