stairs/ safety glass

We are putting in stairs just like the ones in the pic. our house is same layout but not as glam. We have young kids, as well as getting custom made matching stair gates I was thinking of putting a sheet of safety glass above the landing balcony to prevent accidents. do you think this is the best option for safety and visually?? not sure of alternatives...

Safety Glass needs cleaning both side and may need a pattern to stop walk thro on closed gates...

I cant remember back if 2 year olds can climb, but if they can you might need a smooth finish so they have nothing to grip and climb,I would also suggest a sign making company they do a thing product called acrylic or corrugated ,this cut to size would also do they would need to drill holes in the acrylic for you possibly

These are stairs in our new house which I have sanded. My engineer / architect absolutely hate them and want to replace. The whole house is a 70s refurb needing everything reconfigured and re done. The stairs are the only thing I like. I like the iron and considering painting in farrow and ball railings. Rest of house will be minimalist modern, a bit mid century furniture. My engineer thinks it looks like a garden gate. I know cleaning will be a nightmare. Maybe I should replace iron with glass? Any opinion welcome.
