Hi Emmie, My only tip would be to attach your custom-build structure to the wall, one way or the other, to avoid... tip-ping :) If I can picture what you intend to do correctly, you will need to anchor it to the wall. It doesn't involve structural changes necessarily, just a few screws into the wall studs. Other than that, make sure you use the right materials / thickness to support what you intend to display (ie, the shelf for the TV should be thicker than a shelf used for just 1 or 2 picture frames). You can paint the inside of FP opening charcoal and then I would go for a blue/grey and not greige. Those colors tend to be very dark. You have black furnishings and a blue/grey would look very fresh. Your art above FP has blue in it, so replace rug and get some pillows for sofa that will bring in the colors of the painting. Why not just put in some shelves, one big enough to hold tv. That would give a more open concept to room. If you need one enclosed to store components, that would fit also. I would not build up too high on the wall.

HI Sophie, Thanks so much for the suggestions. We would never have thought of moving the sink - I guess you get used to things where they have always been! Just so I can understand and visual where you suggest moving things to, when you say move the fridge down to opposite the pennisula, do you mean near the entry to the kitchen (where the small three cupboards are shown on the drawing above) or where the cooktop is currently? I know one concern that my mum has is that the width of the fridge will jut out too far into the kitchen, taking up too much room. I've attached a picture with dimensions on it. Keep the suggestions coming :)

Hi, Just wondering if anyone would have any ideas for what to use the spaces off our kitchen for. These are very rough drawings to give an idea of the layout. The kitchen/diner were renovated a couple of years ago, but budget restrictions meant we didn't come up with plans for the area at the top right of the drawing. The small room on the extreme top right has a sink and some shelves. We have been using it to store our paint and accessories while DIYing the rest of the house. The space to the left of this, we built a partition wall to separate it from the kitchen and we have a freezer, some shelves, hoover, ironing board etc there. While it is very useful, we feel that the usage of the front utility room is not being maximised, and the partitioned area is a bit of a dumping ground. We have a utility room for washing machine/dryer out the back on this floor, so we don't need that. Any ideas/suggestions would be really gratefully received. Thanking you so much, Jen
