Restoring original frosted glass?

Karen
Hi,

We are hoping to restore our original 1907 front door. Unfortunately the previous owner had multiple stickers stuck on the glass. I have tried to clean the left glass panel using multiple solutions, but the sticker marks are still visible. It doesn't look like there is any glue left to clean, so I'm starting to wonder whether the frosting itself is damaged.

Does anyone have any idea on how I could go about restoring this? I would not wish to lose this beautiful original feature if I can help it.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Jonathan. I thought the same at first, but then realised that I have the same issue underneath the starburst pattern. I haven't touched that yet as I was hoping to test any possible solution on the left panel first... I've searched online but can't seem to find any options. I also don't know whether there are any professionals who might be able to restore them?

I would try neat fairy liquid first. Let it dry and then clean off with white vinegar. This is what I used to clean my acid etched/sandblasted window in my old house. It would be a shame to replace it.

Thanks campo73. I'm starting to think the etching has come off where the stickers used to be :-( The glass itself feels clean and smooth to the touch. I don't think there's any glue/dirt left, but I'll give this method a go for sure. I'm desperate for a solution! I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Unfortunately not :-( the cloth comes clean with any solution that I try, which leads me to believe the glass is itself damaged. I am so disappointed. There must be a way to restore this, surely? I'm now on the hunt for a professional to help...

Oh shame, have you tried googling removing sticker residue from sandblasted/acid etched glass? Otherwise I would contact a local glass maker and see if they can remove the pane and restore. It sounds like the glue residue may have damaged the glass but I would try different techniques before replacement.

Contacted a specialist and they said that by law, once you remove original glass from its place it has toughened. This apparently may break the glass. The alternative is to copy the design onto new glass. I'm running out of options :-(

Maybe you could persevere with different cleaning solutions given the alternative seems to be losing the original glass? I’m not an expert so I wouldn’t want anything to make it worse but perhaps take a look at magic erasers or bar keepers friend.

Let us know if you are successful, would be lovely to see the original glass retained and cleaned up.

Update: I found this article that might explain the issue. Unfortunately it's US-based and the recommended products are not available in the UK.. I'm now searching for other equivalents locally.
