Need more contemporary pendant lights for kitchen
Hi, we are updating our kitchen by having the cabinets refaced in a shaker style and they will be a folkestone gray which is a brownish gray color and the cream counter of the island will be added throughout and we will do simple stainless steel pulls. I'd like to do a chrome faucet and pendants of some sort and am looking for ideas. (We have chrome on our dining chairs which are next to the island) We may eventually change out the backsplash once the cabinets are in so we can see how it looks with the current backsplash. Ideas for pendants would be great (husband prefers not to see the bulb).

Comments (6)if you're not going to center the dining room table under the light, then I'd tend toward a flush or semi-flush fixture, to de-emphasize the alignment. You might want to remove the medallion from the ceiling too. Comments (1)The way we fix this problem when making our custom lighting is to make our top canopy large enough to go in the center, but to be able to cover the junction box. You can use any of our pendant lights and we can put multiple ones on a single canopy to go over the island. A single long canopy would probably look best. Comments (2)The protruding wall around the fireplace needs to be wallpapered or painted with dense motifs or tiled with stone/brick textured tiles or ply. Re-doing your fireplace will drastically change the look of your living room. See photos below. Consider painting the frames of your doors and sliding doors in the living room and kitchen a dark brown to match the floating shelf over the fireplace. Do not decide what you want to do in poor lighting as you have provided in the photos. Wine is a good color to consider. Also think of darker colors like plum and have different shades on each wall (from the same color family). 5 years agoThese are all under $100 on Wayfair. I think I prefer nickel to chrome, to tie in with your vent hood and fridge.

5 years agoHi Jamie, hope the search is going well. Just a couple of considerations when selecting your fixtures- remember that the direction and quality of light is very important for functionality and atmosphere. It is important to try to get some light on the cabinetry to expand the sense of space and create openness. If your husband does not want to see the exposed lamps you could also consider some diffused lighting fixtures. In this case you are depending on some directional recessed down-lights to sufficiently illuminate your work surface- so the diffused light creates a glow and warm atmosphere without creating a shadow cast elsewhere.
One other consideration should be the colour temperature of the lamps (bulbs) themselves- stick with LED 2700K colour temperature whenever possible as this will give you balanced and consistent light quality with the rest of your home and will harmonize with natural daylight colour temperatures especially in the afternoon and evening.
The following are some examples where we used multiple layers of light to ensure a consistent shadow free lighting plan- Recessed down-lights in concert with Pendant Lights, under cabinet lights, valence lights and 'In Cabinet' lights- hope this helps contextualize your lighting plans...
