Is Crown paint poor quality? If so, what brands offer colour match?

Hi wise people,

It has taken me a year, but I finally chose the paint for my living room! Priory from Crown Period Collection.

Started Googling to see how much I'll need, what the coverage is like - and found lots of comments of awful experience, people saying it is thin & water, slippery; putting four coats on and it still looking patchy etc...

What has your experience been with Crown Paint?

Can you name some good (and not expensive) paint companies that offer a match service, so I can still have the colour that looks like Crown's Priory?

After renovating 6 houses I can honestly say that Little Greene and Paint and Paper Library paint give the best coverage. I recently painted over a very dark colour with P&P in a light colour and 1 coat almost obliterated it. After that, Dulux trade.

I'm no expert but have done a fair bit of decorating / painting over the years and can't say my experience with Crown emulsion has been very positive.

Yes, sometimes quite watery (although I'm not a fan of really thick paints like 'one coat' ones), yes multiple coats needed and not very washable once on the walls.

Farrow and Ball is certainly way better in all these respects but exorbitantly expensive.

I've had good results with Dulux (although some of the white gloss paints have turned quite yellow) but also with Wickes paints.

There are many DIY outlets that offer colour matching.

I'm sure you'll get some good pointers here on Houzz

I’d go to a trade decorating centre. Dulux trade, Johnstone’s trade, Crown trade, Brewers etc. They can all colour match for you, no idea on prices tho. Valspar in B&Q can also colour match but I think there’s mixed reviews, although I’ve had no problem with their standard matt emulsion. Off the shelf paint never seems to live up to the quality of trade paint in my experience. Actually Crown trade might possibly have the colour code on their database so maybe worth giving them a call.

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

Shelves above the stove , just one more thing to clean, whatever you put there gets filthy. Love the blue color, the nice thing is in this space you could use any color. I love glass subway tiles they are timeless and come in some wonderful colors.That penquin paper is fun , how about in the bathroom or a childs room.

My first instinct was to move it to a garage/basement for good storage but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prime inside and out with Kilz then apply a couple of coats of white semi-gloss (use good quality paint.. Benjamin Moore) in the same white that you'd use for all the trim in your room. Be sure to lightly sand and 'tack rag' between coats. If the handles are removable by all means remove them prior to painting...fill in holes, sand smooth and paint as previous sentence. Set up inside the way you find most functional. Buy nice new knobs ( maybe crystal?) and, if it is as tall as it appears, have crown molding installed to create a custom look. It is probably far better built than anything else you could find.

crown white emulsion it terrible. It's so thin, let's say you paint over magnolia, the paint leaves a thin mark over the old paint rather than covering it...

I love Little Greene and Farrow & Ball but they are pricey. I have used Dulux paint and it’s quite thick and covers well so okay if the others are too pricey. I also painted my kitchen in Wilkos emulsion many years ago and it was surprisingly nice.
