stencilling a concrete patio

Hi all!
Since removing a couple of sheds at our new house at the bottom of the garden, we are left with a v large patio area that is all concrete. It might be around 20' long!
Can't afford to tile/deck it all so though of stencilling it with a pretty pattern. Something contemporary/Victorian style of tiles perhaps.
Q. ..
1) after jet washing clean, should we use the mould reducer wash on it first BEFORE painting?
2) what paint is best and most durable? I know you can get stains and that's fine if we go dark grey/navy, but if we want a white tone then need paint.
3) any advice on where to buy the stencils that aren't too expensive?
Any other tips appreciated!

Comments (2)You can go far enough out on your slope so the vertical distance from the ground at your existing terrace and the slope is 3' or less. There are lots of retaining wall systems you can DIY there at the 3' limit and backfill to level a larger area. You might take in dirt when someone excavates for a pool, for instance - contact the pool contractors in your area and offer to take dirt for them as spring comes. you can also borrow the dirt from your own land further out. Once you make a larger flat area, treat the area where it slopes off from it with some thoughtful planters surrounding 6-10 wide / 4' deep "stairs" . Your leveling above will make the transition area a bit more steep . . so use this area for kitchen garden / raised beds that you sit at from the terrace side and walk up to from the bottom. The slope between should be stairs and on the outside edges you can use groundcover or plant more edibles. Then you'll always have herbs near the kitchen. The stairs will be large and wide enough to provide more seating or even be a play stage with audience arrayed below. Consider shade and where you want it when you plant trees. Deciduous trees are wonderful in colder climates as they give shade only in the summer and then provide architecture but no leaves for allowing winter sun in . . . Think of the land as a series of "rooms" with functions. The larger flat area will allow you to provide a dining terrace behind the grill area and expand your seating where you have the french doors. Comments (13)I would use plants to brighten the space. The hardscapes are all good, they just look a bit naked and grim. It can be hard to make a space pretty but usable for the kids too, but its not impossible. You have a lovely sitting area to enjoy. Plant some lovely feature bushes in that gravel area. You don't need to completely hide the clothesline, but having something pretty and showy in front will create a boundary and the eye will be drawn to the plants instead of the washing. If you can't plant into the soil there, some large size pots will work. Maybe some medium sized (1-2metre) ornamental trees in pots, like citrus, a weeping ornamental cherry, or bay trees, moptop robinias are nice too. They will be compact. You could cluster some pots of herbs underneath or plant them and let them ramble a little. Herbs like thyme and rosemary and lavender will suit the gravel area and the heat and be hardy with kids playing around, the odd bike falling on them or crushing underfoot would be quite okay. bulbs in pots or planted around the edges of the lawn are great value low maintenance and hardy colour. You can get great seasonal variation in your view then. Online bulb stores like tesselar and garden express sell bulk landscaping bulbs at very reasonable prices. You can get hundreds of bulbs for $30-50. Bulbs are great hardy plants that won't be killed by the odd soccer ball either. The flowers may get knocked over or the leaves, but the bulb is safe under the soil. Cheap and cheerfuls like nasturtiums are good value colour that will self seed every season. Also, plant some very bright flowering shrubs behind the soccer net and against the far wall. Maybe some hibiscus? You need something to catch and entice the eye, plant some large flowering shrubs with larger or bright flowers or foliage you will be able to appreciate from a distance....See MoreGlynnStone Creative Construction

6 years agoOk so I did a few tests. Pink is shed/fence paint. I thought I had Cuprinol garden shades but it was Wilko’s own brand equivalent, similar stuff tho. Absorbed quite well but a bit thin and obvious acrylic content which the paint is intended to have for water resistance. White is chalk paint. I used Aldi brand. Didn’t absorb too well but great coverage. Red is fabric dye. Just wanted to try this out as I had some sitting in the cupboard. You can see where I painted it (darker blotch in the middle) and the paler edge is where the dye has bled out so wouldn’t recommend this for stenciling. Just as a reference I also did the same test on unfinished soft pine. In all cases I would use a sealant on top. Also did a weathering test which I will post in next comment.

6 years agoSo for a weathering test I just scrubbed the concrete with water and sanded the pine wood. Bear I mind I haven’t put any sealer on. Pink shed/fence paint didn’t fair too well. White chalk paint not terrible and red dye certainly not budging but I wouldn’t get too close as it would stain clothing etc. The wood had a similar outcome. All in all I think I’d go for chalk paint but would like to know results of masonry paint and garage floor paint tests. P.s. the dark wood stain below my tests on the pine is liquid shoe polish...£1, poundland:) Do let us know how you get on.
