I'd say go for it! Its my dream for when we've saved up to do our extension! No more running up and down stairs with baskets of washing and ironing...you baisically doing the job twice with a downstairs laundry!! Hope this helps!!

I would personally go for it as my utility room is in my basement so it's a long trek but make sure there's good ventilation/extraction and if you have kids and wash clothes during the evening consider sound proofing. Do consider if you dry clothes outside though, maybe a laundry chute could work instead?

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

It seems that the objections of noise can be addressed with sound proofing in the area, and that precautions can be taken to minimize the damage of a possible leak. Why not ask the architect how to address all the concerns and see how much it will cost? This way you are making an informed decision rather not doing it because others think it is crazy. We have one in our kitchen and to address the noise and vibration, we reinforced the floor with a small concrete slab and bought a very quiet model of washer and dryer. And, you can always install an easy shutoff valve to turn off the water if you aren't using the washer. Good luck, and having the washer where you want it is not crazy!

Thanks guys! I love the idea of not having to trek up and down the stairs! More often than not I'd be using the clothes horse depending on how well the Irish weather here is behaving.

1. HI, I had exactly the same issue as you a few years ago, and had always dreamed of not having to trek up and down stairs with piles of washing. 3 years on I couldn't be happier, my washer / dryer is in my upstairs bathroom near all the bedrooms and all the washing is contained in those rooms. In the US many houses have upstairs laundry rooms. I can see the value of doing so. The issue is if there plumbing and extraction fan etc upstairs in the room you want to use? You would need to have the concrete floor excavated to allow plumbing for water.

Thank you all so much for your comments and advice. I'm much more confident with the idea now, especially hearing its commonly done in other countries. Luckily for us the house is a new build so pipes etc can be put in upstairs first day. TV point is something I had overlooked!

consider having a laundry chute from upstairs to the laundry room below?

I have a laundry upstairs and love it! Ideally located next to the family bathroom. I highly recommend, and don't worry about noise if you have kids... machines aren't so noisy nowadays and the kids get used to it anyway.

We tanked the whole floor like a wetroom and fitted a drain... just in case. Also fitted underfloor hearing.

So... go for it if you can!

I'd say go for it! No particular reason to keep it downstairs, so long as the issues of noise and drainage are properly covered off. And as others point out, it saves on the treks up and down the stairs. I would certainly recommend tanking & fitting a drain, just in case - I'd also suggest a floor such as Karndean's Palioclic, which is impervious to water, so if you ever did have a leak, it could be lifted and relaid.

Go for it I think it is a fab idea I have always dreamt of having one. As you are in the planning stages I can't see why you can't put the necessary fixtures tanking, vents etc. in to guard against flooding and damp. It doesn't even need to take up much space.

Hi Brid - I'm also in Ireland and thinking that a upstairs laundry room might be the way to go. There's be a lot less bringing things down and back up the stairs. Did you go head with yours? If so, how's it going for you?

I just put an offer on a new build where the laundry room is upstairs. I have never had that before. I am scared to death.
