Which Scandanavian wooden floors would you go for? Douglas Fir or Oak

Many of our customers have chosen Douglas Fir, but we wanted to see what the houzz community would choose out of interest.

We can see why your customers have chosen Douglas Fir. It has such a wonderful patina. Wide long planks of Douglas fir show of the grain beautifully.

We definitely fit and refurbish more Douglas Fir, but Oak is very lovely as well, especially with the wide boards. Both are lovely, but we are biased.

Thanks Carol!! I agree...love the wood effect and that why we are going for the wooden doors, windows and floors...I guess I'm just panicking now just before we make the final decision that it might be a bit overpowering! Really appreciate your comment! Thanks!

Thank you Patricia. I just got back from tile store and saw this display which i think is beautiful - it's an italian marble so there will be inconsistencies which I think is actually what I love about it. I would imagine a cream colour kitchen but possibly with a light grey island, or would it be better to stay all the same?

First before you think of putting grey on your walls take into account the light in your kitchen. Where do you live? Is it sunny most of the year? Is your sky grey 4 to 6 months of the year in the winter and spring? Grey can be very depressing when you are surrounded by it day after day. My vote is for white walls or a light color. You also have to take into account what the other rooms are painted that are open to the kitchen's sight line.

thanks all.. I'm trying the steel wool & vinegar option on test board and also have briwax limed. testing a few effects... this is one coat of solution soaked 1 day with wax rubbed in. it might be a lil silvery

We find oak to be very popular in a lacquer or oiled finish in both plank and herringbone. Although we do supply a fair amount of oak flooring finished in a variety of different coloured lacquers. We agree with you that wide board oak is lovely.

Douglas Fir but the classic not natural and Dinesen with extra long and wide planks and soap & lye, light finish. We're looking into this but it's quite a commitment both in terms of additional cost, fitting and maintenance so currently very torn between this and engineered ash which is substantially cheaper/easier but doesn't quite seem to have the character.
