Which vanity top (colour/material) doesn't go out of date?

We are looking at updating all 3 of our bathrooms and are considering leaving the vanities but replacing the tops, handles, sinks and taps. I'm not sure which material to use, laminate, engineered stone or granite. Due to the all wood in our home, i'm leaning towards a plain white top and sink. A clean, simple design that i can add color to.

What material and color would you say would date the least? It seems as though the marble or flecked look would out date the fastest. Pictures below are in order of bathroom.

A plain white engineered stone (found in most ranges like Caesartone, Eurostone, PrimeStone etc) will be your best bet - It does not require sealing unlike granite, and will last longer than laminate and will perform well in wet areas. For small areas it will not cost a bomb!

You are so right white is never out of fashion. I would set your budget and then look at your options. If you plan to stay in the house for many years then spend to the top of your budget (if that is going to give you a life time of pleasure), if you plan on being at the home for only a short time / few years then I would go mid range so it looks lovely, will have good resale value but you can invest your well earned money to go towards something else as well. Obviously Marble / Granite is the top of the range but there are so many cheaper and very attractive options these days that look just as good.

Re: black granite------ I'm not a pro or anything, but we put a home depot grade black granite as our vanity top in a bathroom and the spots and finger prints do drive me crazy, and I'm the last person to call a neat freak. It never seems clean. I was recently at floor and decor looking at granite (dreaming of finishing a basement) and saw a honed black granite that looked really nice if your heart is set on black. I've seen that (honed black) in a kitchen in a luxury home and it looks extremely nice. It's a bit more expensive, but worth considering if choosing between black granites. Personally, I'm more of a marble fan and have marble in the kitchen. It's more high maintenance (meaning, you just have to use common sense and not treat it like you did in college). I've also owned a home with silestone and that is one durable and tough stone.

Mary, I am very glad to hear from you. I think of you often. It hurt me terribly when that unthoughtful person said what she said. I can only imagine how it must have hurt you. I would love to see how you have decorated for Christmas. I am almost certain there are differences between how our 2 countries do it. Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to shove the expense and go for full shelves as I will be renting. Cut costs by using mdf sadly alot of messes happen coz I can't be there and have no van to buy materials myself. My wardrobe doors turned out messed up as had a circular route instead of straight lines so they're new but dated. I can't afford it but I'll definitely put up a few eccentric ideas on how to hide it and will look forward to the feedback from that! Thanks

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

Thanks for the advise, I am waiting for a quote on gloss laminex which looks like marble. I'd rather spend the big bucks on our kitchen benches. I'm now trying to decide on basin, taps, bath and toilets.

A Gloss Laminate top might not cost much less than a low price Engineered Stone. You only need 20mm thick. If the Laminate is not done properly it can blow out if water gets into it.

I always say do it once do it right.
