Need help with choosing plants for the backyard

The area to design is not very big, but I am struggling with choosing some plants that I like and not being able to match them with what we already have or not matching with the overall design. Please help. It's a mainly a full sun area.. one of the pictures shows the side part with a little partly shade area. thanks

Comments (16)You need some kitchen accessories kettle etc that tie in with the red and also some artwork. The red you have chosen looks on my monitor to be a cool red, perhaps a bit of a warmer shade would help. i would also extend the dining area curtains down to the floor, they will cosy up the space, as would a statement rug to give a bit more life to the room. If your living room is green then it may be nice to have some token green of the same shade, somewhere in the kitchen, a plant or some artwork, and add a bit of the kitchen red to your living room, so that there is some continuity of colour in your home, as opposed to having two separate colour boxes and never the twain shall meet.....See MoreNeed help updating bathroom
Comments (21)My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. Comments (3)I would grow one or two evergreens in pots so you have some winter interest and then, depending on how sunny your balcony is in summer, try some herbs as previously suggested and also tubs of edibles such as tomatoes and strawberries. Depends how much time you have to look after the plants. Things like pelargoniums are colourful and thrive on very little watering, but won't last through the winter....See More

11 years agoThank you very much for your comments. I am adding one more picture since that one is dark. I'm not sure about the name of the plant. That's the only big plant left. The house is in California/ Sacramento. We had palm on both sides of the big plant, but they are dead due to cold winter. I also added some pictures of the kind of plans that I like. Not sure if they will work together or how to incorporate them. Thanks

11 years agoSince you have stones in other areas, I'd keep the stones, & use weed killer in the one back area (as I said above). I think the tall purple one is a cordyline (red leaf dracena). It would look good in the raised bed with this silver ground cover.

In the area that looks somewhat overgrown. I'd clean it out and plant ivy geranium as a ground cover, maybe white.
