Before & After Paint Fireplaces

Here are before and after of our fireplace...I did like the wood before however wanted to update, too much wood in the house! Just have to spray the gold rim black and wax the finish and we are done :-)

This is one of those cases where I like both the before and the after! Love the style of the mantle too, will look fantastic when decorated for the christmas season :).

Lower the painting get rid of the tiny lamps and all the other stuff on top and then see what you want to do. I am only seeing the pic of your sideboard which I think is quite nice. Replace the lamps with either one on one side and something in apple green on the other side for balance or 2 larger lamps if you like symmetry , The painting should hang a little lower that 5’ to the center in a DR you could also go larger or a great mirror to give some life to that wall I am seeing another piece of furniture right beside that is it staying ? I would like to see a pic of the whole space.

It looks very pretty. I would look at pics of painted floors versus whitewashed and see which you prefer then people can hopefully help with methods. I've used chalk paint but not on a floor. Annie Sloan sell floor lacquer so you don't need to use the wax which is very time consuming to apply, the lacquer can be rollered on. The only thing I would say is that it does not adhere to I think varnish made in the 80's and I find the White paint coverage is poor although not an issue if white washing. Hello Sarah, Well if you're not keen on the blue you may wish to change.. There are a number of chalk board paint colours so you could choose a charcoal for example rather than a black.. There is a blue and a rust colour and also a pink I have seen... With white too also seen, you can mix and create a colour that might give you more options.. . :))

Thanks, we are going to paint the wall the fireplace is on in a darker grey colour to make it pop out

I did that to ours too. I haven't got a before picture, but this is the after.. I just need to decide what to do with the hearth. I'm open to any ideas! I also painted the mirror above and an old Dutch dresser in chalk paint that was left by the previous owners. I love chalk paint!

I like the painted look ;) I think that the wall might need painting now, though, as the surround colour blends in with the wall and the hearth stands out.

I love updating old stuff,i like the tiles on the back of the fire,think i will give it ago and go and look for some nice tiles,i am not going to tile the wall i will tile the wood back then when i get fed up can easily change,

I am also considering painting my fireplace surround, however, have a wood burning stove which obviously gets very hot. Is chalk paint or eggshell compatible with high temperatures? thanks

Tscott009, check with your local decorators merchants for advice on the correct paint to use with your wood burner. I would think that eggshell would be better for keeping clean and standing up to the heat. Chalk paint marks easily, even waxed.

That looks gorgeous! I have a dark wood dresser similar from my grandparents and feel a bit more confident in painting it now after seeing your lovely result :)

It's this paint in 'everlasting'. A lovely white colour. I got it on Amazon after researching the best chalk paints! x

For anyone thinking of painting a fireplace or anything else that will have to withstand heat my professional advice would be to NOT use chalk paint, which to all intents and purposes is emulsion. This paint will crack and peel with heat and will also not be able to deal with the wood contracting and expanding at different times of the year depending on the ambient temperature and humidity levels of the room. Eggshell paint can be used on both wood and metal, including those areas that will withstand heat such as radiators, and can flex to deal with changes of temperature. People don't seem to use it as much at the moment because you do actually have to do some work and thoroughly remove all wax and varnish before it can be used. Chalk paint is a quick fix solution but not a long term solution.

I revamped my dark mahogany fire surround with stone effect spray paint in light beige, then I sealed it with a clear spray lacquer. It hasn’t suffered at all with heat from the fire.
If people are painting any metal parts of a wood burner or fire, “stove paint” is the best stuff to use, as the name is self explanatory.

i wanted to do something similar with my dark fireplace surround. Would you mind advising the brand of stone effect spray paint you used and the lacquer. Also, does anyone have any tips for cleaning the brass surround at the fire hearth and how to give dull cream marble (stained and chipped in places!) new life. many thanks

HU-827977078 I used products by Plastikote.
As my fireplace was quite dark, after lightly sanding to prep so the paint would key, I first used a cream shade in Satin Super Spray. This provided a good even lighter base, to then use the Stone Touch spray paint over it so the coverage was solid.
For the lacquer, I used Stone Touch clear sealer spray, which you can get in gloss, satin or matt. It doesn’t turn yellow and can even be used outdoors.
It states on the Plastikote web site that Stone Touch spray paints are heat resistant which is ideal for a fire surround.
The surface is tough and durable. I’ve seen in reviews on Amazon where people have even used it on stair steps and walk on it without problems.
It gives a nice finish and people don’t realise it’s not actually stone, unless you look very closely. I painted mine a few years ago and it’s still fine.
