The dreaded textured wallpaper...

How can I best remove this wallpaper....any advice please. Is it a massive job? Our 4m X 5m room is covered with the stuff!

Poor Clodagh! I fear you may be gone for some time. Seriously, it will depend on what the paper is and how well it is attached. If it is blown vinyl, the top (textured) layer may just peel off leaving you a smooth layer like a lining paper, ready to paper over. If on the other hand it is like a wood chip, I'd get a great selection of music, a good steamer - or several - and if possible a bunch of cheerful, helpful friends. The price of a pizza or a Chinese would be money well spent.

I would buy a wallpaper scorer from any diy store, I would use this to score the paper then either a steamer or a wallpaper remover and a scraper to get all this off. It will give your arms a good workout. Hope this helps.

Your bed is beautiful, rather than using colour, why not keep the existing curtains and enhance them and the bed by adding texture in the same neutral palette, perhaps adding texture through a grass cloth type wallpaper, which is not that overpowering could be used on all the walls, adding a rug, and one or two big fluffy cushions and a throw. Further down the line I would balance the size of the bed with as big a locker I could fit either side of the bed, and a bench/ottoman at the end. Good luck, it looks like a lovely space!

Old painting pattern technique with a wash alonge was used. Fairly small paint lumps, big ones can be scrapped off id reckon. How do we reckon wallpaper would fair?

If it is a vinyl then you must peel the top plastic layer off before you use a steamer but it should come off without too many problems.
Beware though as the walls underneath may need some attention before painting them.

Don't use a steamer if the walls are made of plasterboard.

I don't think it's going to be as hard as you think. I would imagine the top layer is going to peel off relatively easily. Then work on one wall at a time..............score the backing paper ( you can use a paint scraper ), fully soak the wall all over ( using a big car sponge - and i mean soak it ), then go back to the beginning and re-soak an area of around 6-8 feet at a time. Scrape the paper in an upwards but slightly sideways direction, It should hopefully come off ok. Steamers are a waste of time! The old fashioned way, worked well enough for decades! Good luck x

Agree with Man about the House's method. Our house had wallpaper inc woodchip in every room when we bought it - still have the hallway to tackle. I found peeling the top layer and soaking with hot water the best method on vinyl papers, other ones I just soaked and scraped a corner free and got my kids involved in a competition of who could pull off the biggest piece in one go.
