Would anybody have a recommendation as to how I would clean my red brick fire place. It is about 130 years old and aside from the bad cement work over the years, the bricks are faded and very dirty. I would appreciate any feedback. Una
Get your vacuum out, put the upholstery brush on the end of your wand - and vacuum it.
BTW - Brick doesn't fade. This is a fireplace that was never originally intended to be seen and was covered by plasterwork and a stone or wooden mantelpiece... ...so as a result, the old plaster is still in the pores of the clay brick giving it that aged appearance.
I agree with the previous replies and would add that, after you clean it up, you can give it some life with a stone or masonry sealer, which will freshen it up somewhat.
Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions. At least I now know what I am limited to doing myself and will give it a go. After that, I will call in the professionals. Thanks again for taking the time to provide the advice. Best regards, Una
