Fab Dated staircase - keep or replace?

We are looking at new properties to renovate as ours is now on the market and we saw this house with this imposing staircase. I presume it's perhaps a 70's style?

Personally I think they could be quite modern with the right adjustments as I see a lot of floating type staircases like these on Houzz.

My questions to you is are these a no no and need replacing? Or are these a gem and with some updating could they be a real feature??

Hello Tani,

I think these could be really good!! ... What I might do if it was mine, is replace the "tread runner" with a Coir or Jute with a stripe on the edge if it's staying the wood finish.. Then I would remove the banister going up the stairs altogether! Or the same but painted to blend with the wall colours and a "tread runner" in the same colour, or perhaps nothing at all.. So it blends into the walls... Either way for me it's no banister... : ))

Hi! Yes I love the actual steps but was thinking even a glass side panel or upright rods would look better.

The capers treads are v dated and love the idea of a striped 'runner'

I imagine replacing the whole thing would cost an arm and a leg but up close, the actual design does look quite funky.

Not sure on the age of them but the house has a lot of 'period' features.

Mary, it has been a while since I read the comments. I think you can take your time with growing with your new decluttered kitchen. It is truly beautiful with just the changes. Don't go spend a ton of money, save it and go on a holiday to a state park or something you have always wanted to do. If your friends that you invite over for dinner don't love ...... well just coming over and visiting,.... then oh well. As long as you are happy, but no need to break the bank..... you did great already. I love it, if you do more, please share though? And to bamamom, I so agree with you! My own, awful, claustrophobic kitchen is LESS than 8 ft x 11 ft... yep that tiny and horrible. I have taken out the nasty, dropped ceiling and have the slightly vaulted original one now, but with pipes showing where the HVAC was put in after and then the repiped ones....... I did not know they plumber would do this, much less the others were there.... gag me. And no money to do it up even decent.

Kitchen cabinets will look fantastic painted. The thing to consider when thinking about worktops is the work black granite creates - they show every little watermark, so need a lot of polishing. I discovered this when doing lots of experiments on granite samples! Other thing to bear in mind is granite is porous, so you have to be careful about staining the lighter coloured worktops and granite requires resealing after a few years. Because I'm quite lazy and didn't want any maintenance, plus we are a messy family, I went with Compac Quartz in white mirror, it's practically bomb proof and I haven't managed to stain it yet (3 years on). Comes in tons of colours.

Please, please, please, don't paint any of the wood. You have a beautiful setting for mid century modern décor. I can agree with removing the carpet from the stairs, however I would just want to add a jute floor covering for the stairs after. The light fixtures should probably both be changed. You even have a lovely roomy space in your foyer. I always recommend starting with the foundation of the room, which is the floor covering. Kilim, ikat, Persian or Oriental would be my choice. I would think minimalist would be very fitting in this space.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Hello Tani,

Well I posted some pics to go along with my suggestions.. none of these have glass or any panels... I do like this idea more perhaps than glass but of course it's entirely your choice! I have one further idea to make them appear to "Float" that is if you keep the stair treads brown wood and paint their underside angled beams to blend with the wall colour... They could look like the one' pictured.. Anyway.. a few ideas that you can consider, for me though it's no glass.. : ))

Ah sorry - the pictures didn't come up at first so have only just seen them.

They are gorgeous but they make me scared to death! Ha ha. It's a family home or for older people we would be renovating it for so I don't think removing the side rail would be good in this house.

Love the idea of painting everything but the treads so they appear to float though!

Just need to look at what rails would work with the treads to make it modern but not too contemporary or too old fashioned.

Hello Tani,

Ah I thought it was for you.. You're moving aren't you? Anyway, sorry I added them right after I posted so you could see exactly what I mean.. Perhaps you can paint and paint the rail but leave the treads... That way the rails in place but you don't see it! It would though have to be in the colour of the walls to work... You could even paint the treads a completely different colour if you wanted to say blend with the floor?

There are countless ways to deal with these stairs... So many options... So perhaps nothing really needed than a lick of paint (or not as you may prefer) and perhaps new treads.. Maybe though discuss with the eventual occupants as they may not like my ideas at all! : ))

Our house is up for sale and this is one we are considering buying next to do up and sell on. We would want a bit more garden space than this one offers but it needs gutting as wood panelled walls, textured ceilings etc etc.

Not many houses where we are wanting to move to so we might just have to renovate another house whilst we are looking for our long term home. Hard work!! Ha ha

Sounds like a fantastic plan to me! Maybe don't think of the long term home yet and just do some renovations... If you really want to make money there are many ways to add £££ whilst doing or spending very little... If you know what to do and what not to do... It's never hard if you enjoy it! : ))

Omg Definitely keep the stairs. You could add transparent panels on the sides and between the steps to make it super modern and slick or a vintage style metal balustrade which is very chic

I would keep everything. Especially if you are selling it to make a profit. Get rid of all the 'period' features in the house and give it back it's mid century vibe.

If you weren't selling it and didn't mind spending something on it then...

Lethal to small children and anyone with mobility issues or visual problems. Get rid before someone breaks their neck!
Probably don't even confirm to current safety regs.
