I think you're right to change your plans tbh, I think pic 1 and 3 would work. Another option is a suspended woodburner. It's obviously not a divide but it gives you the break in the ceiling so acts as one. The first one attached is from fireplaceproductsUK. The other 2 are just images from leotrippi and homedesignht to show how they can act to divide a room. A much more expensive option is a glass fireplace, this is from acucraft fireplaces. I'm not sure how easy it is to find UK manufacturers/suppliers though. Alternatively you can just break the room with furniture layout and ceiling lights. The lights if hung properly ie at differing heights, clusters etc along with floor lamps will stop that cavernous feel. I can't obviously see the plan but if you're really set on a divide, and they are great!, you could set it off a side wall rather than down the centre of the room.

Hello Jen, I am so surprised that no one has mentioned vertical blinds to you? They are very much back in fashion and work beautifully in a room such as yours. They come in 3.5" veins, which mean they will fold back and tuck into each recess when fully open. They turn to let as much light in as you need and then close when you want full privacy. They will be fitted in the recess above the windows. You can either have one complete rail length or two so you have a separate section over the door. You can have what's know as a middle split, i.e: half goes left and right. Personally I would suggest one length that opens to the left, therefore leaving your door completely uncovered when open. The pulley system is very much like a roller blind and are safety fixed to the wall so children can not get caught in them. They come in a huge rang of colours and materials and better still they are very affordable. I am working with a number of new developments in Hertfordshire at the moment and these are what the clients are all asking for. East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

Hello kswardrobe, Well some thoughts are... can you put in some internal glass doors? This would allow light to flow from rooms... Presume the bedroom has a window but is north facing? Is the front door also part of this hallway? Can you install a door with glass too? So the hall can benefit from light in this way too? Other things would be to leave doors open so that light from rooms can flood out into the hall.. Further ideas are well placed mirrors that bounce light.. What is on the walls? Does this hinder the feeling of light and airy.. light flooring would also help here too.. :))
