Short Deck Ideas

We have a short deck that is level with our backdoor. The deck is going on 15 years and some of the boards are splintering. About 2 years ago we applied one of those deck restore, rhino liner type coatings. It has since peeled off and now we have to do something with the deck. They are also beginning to build a house directly behind us and having the deck raised slightly makes us feel like we are sitting right at fence height and we really enjoy our privacy.

So we are at a delimma as to whether we should restore the deck as it is, adding a pergola and maybe some lattice screens or remove the deck and pour a slab and have some steps down? Either way we've also debated adding a solid roof. We'd really appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

I would maintain the deck that is directly under your existing eave (outside the door) at the current height as it could lead to a whole other problem with the brick siding.

And than have a wrap around step that goes down the the main entertainment space: increasing the size of the deck to encompass the empty space between your existing deck and the house (shown in the last photo).

With a single step down from that to ground level.

Currently it is hard concrete and brick directly under the eve at the door, barely large enough for a chair, it then flows seamlessly to a same-level deck. (You can make out some of this on the 2nd photo).

If we stepped down from the eve level at the door to a concrete slab, what, if anything, should we do about a roof or coverage?

East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

After moving in, I bought a carpet 2 years ago. It was pricey and very comfortable. Can't really justify pulling it up (yet!!). It may have been a rash decision however as it was a practical solution to a very cold room. Now we are finally getting round to decorating the room, pulled out the fitted wardrobes and found no floor under the dodge carpet it was standing on. We had originally covered an ugly hardwood floor in the rest of the room and what we have now is the original floor boards underneath along one length of the. Room. Thought about leaving all old original floorboards exposed but the breeze is literally coming up through them. Carpet has been discontinued and can't get more of same piece. Drop between carpet and old wood in about a 2 inches. Any ideas how to make this a feature would be great. Can't turn bed other way due to electrics. Colour is hard to match. Please help

Big drop from French Doors to garden (kid friendly ideas)

Our new house has a large drop from the back door (soon to be French doors) to the back garden. I have an active 18 month old boy and a soon to be mobile 6 month old girl, there is no way I can leave the set up as it is as its very steep and dangerous (even for adults). The most obvious solution I can see is to build out a raised deck. Its a sunny spot in the evenings so it probably would be used, but tbh decking is just not really something I naturally gravitate towards. I was wondering if there were any other ideas I have overlooked? it has to be relatively cheap as our savings are being swallowed by the house renovation. I need something kid (and dog) safe that will lessen the chance of accidents. Thank you!

Pergola for the roof, with or without glass top or any wisteria or other vines growing atop it. Preferably wrap it around the corner of your house to form an "L".

Adding a glass top to part of it would enable you to add ceiling fans, should you choose to do so, and enjoy a light summer rain from the deck, too. One corner of the "L" could be a place to park your covered bbq grill, too -- handy but not where you sit most.

With a sturdy frame, you can add hanging baskets filled with strawberry plants or ivy or flowering plants to enjoy and even to help shade your eyes.

Very much like the birdhouse. More posts in the yard with hanging brackets on all four sides could hold baskets of growing plants, sun catchers, wind chimes and humming bird feeders, etc...

You should at least consider retractable screens. They will solve the privacy issue without obscuring your view. Depending on how you want to use that particular space, a permanent roof in conjunction with the screens turns the area into a full 3 season room protected from wind, rain, sun, bugs, and neighbors. The retractable convenience allows you to enjoy the open air anytime as well.

Ask yourself how important this area is to you and how do you intend on using it.

Other options would be a pergola with the screen(s), or a retractable awning with a drop shade/valance (it's the same screen material that extends vertically from the front bar of the awning upon full extension. The drop shade is typically used for privacy, early morning and late day sun).
