Hedge!
Hi there, we are in a complete dilemma so I thought I'd come to the best place for advice :)
We have Leylandi hedges down both sides of our 150' garden. Unfortunately they were not maintained prior to us buying the house so are very wide 120cm - 250cm depending on where in the garden you are. On the left it is not our boundary and the hedge is in our garden. On the right it is our boundary and the other side is a public village footpath - not hugely busy.
We just don't know whether to get rid of them or live with it. It will be expensive to redo but we are about to landscape the garden which we obviously want to get right.
I prefer hedges to fence but we can't have no privacy for however many years that would take! On our neighbours side they are responsible for the boundary but we can't just cut down the hedge and tell them they need to pay for a fence!

So looking at hedging or other ideas for the side fences then shrubs / plants / flowers for the main parts. I'd be interested innyour ideas. Comments (21)Since you have a choice of any color, don't choose colors that clash with the purplish pink paint next door. I'd choose a creamy white for the body of the house, and very dark purple (aubergine/eggplant) for the trim. Navy blue would also look good. Avoid red or green. Awnings would look great. I can see striped awnings in a cream and navy, with the building colors selected from the awning colors. If you can't eliminate the wires, run them through conduit or cover them with an approved casing that runs right under the windows. Comments (2)You could plant a mature fast growing hedge such as Griselinia (some people call them weeds as they grow so fast and are relatively cheap) or plant a few mature trees like evergreen oak and prune to shape each year. 8 years agoIn regards to splitting the Leylandii, it will take nutrients, but apply tree and shrub fertiliser to new hedge and it will get a boost, also consider drip water pipe for irrigation.
It is important to remember that at some stage you will need to remove the rest of the leylandii hedge. So will end up paying for it twice!
Personally I would remove hedge entirely and put in a chain-link for security then plant hedging 150/175, apply well rotted farmyard manure (can be purchased in 3 cubic meter bulk bags and dig in)
You could attach wind breaking netting to fence till hedge matures enough to take it down. In my own garden I planted griselinia (had to match neighbors hedge) bare rooted, it was over 2 meters tall within two years, again well fed. Bare root griselinia cost about a euro each.
