Brighten up our living room

Hi all,
Im fed up with our living room and looking for some advice. We just renovated our kitchen and its white with pops of colour. We were going to do a chunky shelf unit to go to the left and above our sliding door in the living room. Love the couch but looking for different colour on walls and what I can do to modernise! Room in dark too. Thanks in advance.

I think you can paint the walls in white. It will make the room look brighter and bigger.

I agree with Pippa, go white or off white, this will allow more brightness into your living space.

As we specialise in window fixtures i would also a full pinch pleated net voile on a track, this will allow you to have some privacy when needed but allow enough light into the room.

Secondly I would suggest a change of curtains, custom made pinch pleated in a cream with a small pattern perhaps floral. New window fixtures generally will spark your creativity and allow you to work off the neutral colours. Throw in a few bespoke cushions that match your curtains, possibly add swarovski crystals into the middle of the cushions and maybe to your pinch pleat on your curtains.

Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? The mirror seems a bit small to me.

I think it is a matter of who likes apples and who likes oranges. I am in Margo's corner on this one....but it is JM humble O. The purple tones of the grass mat wall paper nice, more modern, the gray tones, a little more traditional. So either will achieve a nice look, it's a matter of taste.

Consider the black to be a neutral. Wall color is your last choice after you have chosen your accent colors. You need an inspiration piece to give you your color palette first. Usually that inspiration piece is a piece of art or a rug. Choose pillows and accessories from those colors. Then choose the wall color from that palette as well.

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

I'd lower the photographs and pictures too if you re-hang after painting.

Great thanks for the comments. I just need to restart by painting and hopefully that will improve the look. Its just so dark and we have a huge tree outside the living room window too.

get rid of the tree! love the colour on the walls but you need to allow more light in the room by removing the tree or at least trim it right back.
