Hi, do you have any pictures of the kitchen cabinets or the room? Are you having a kitchen island? I ask as if you're worried about playing it safe but nervous about a bold colour, a contrasting kitchen island can be a lovely feature and introduce bolder colours

I love the idea of navy base units and white wall units. White countertop. Gold accent handles. But without seeing your kitchen it's hard to suggest something that might work in the space!

I would use the same flooring throughout, give your separation of spaces visually with decor and I love Vancouver Day from C2 paint I have it all through my house in different strengths, very neutral so almost anything goes with it.

Put your headboard against the feature wall. Do you have a headboard? If not you could hang a mirror above the bed to bring more light into the room. Keep the curtains or roman blind neutral and if you wish to bring in colour you could get some big red tiebacks.

Hi there Fiona, It would be great if you could attach some photos of the bathroom! What mood are you going for in there? What ideas have you had thus far re: paint colours? With north facing rooms I heard it's best to stay away from cool colours like greys and go for something with a little warmth like yellow or creamy neutrals. However tiling and lighting can also add warmth if you're set on a cool colour scheme. It's good to have glossy rather than matt units so that whatever light does get it in is dispersed around the room. Painting the ceiling a brilliant white would also help reflect light. Hi, what a lovely "canvas" to begin! My late husband loved wood. I think it is too drab and have changed mine for glass and various off whites as the rooms are non-square here and the house is old but takes modern too. My gut feeling is that the way forward is to choose an exciting "theme" for downstairs first. Would you consider bright and airy sky, or tropical, or geometric, or bookish, or carnival, or countryside, what about a space rocket on the wall for the kids - it can be covered when they grow tired of it? And as it is it has my pet hate - a good window - wasted - with a grim reminder of housework - a sink in front of it instead of one out of sight with a strip light over it!!!!

Hi , have you seen f/b white tie its a really classy warm off- white? White kitchens are predicted by the designers to be very on trend this year. Nothing bounces around light like white. Think of your kitchen as a work in progress, be proud of what you have already achieved. I would get the bones of your kitchen right first and then build on that. If you let it evolve slowly like a fine wine you will get amazing results. Kitchens are so expensive and we all want to get them right for that reason, so I think taking your time is a ladies choice, right? You can address any light issues later with some artificial task lighting when future funds permit. Tread slowly and build it up slowly. Or simply paint the walls in an inexpensive white paint, live with it for a few weeks/months, by then you will know what you want. Hope that helps.

I like OnePlans idea but I also love deep colour. If you want a bold colour don't be put off by the North facing window but choose a pale floor and a pale worktop.
Personally I like dark grey on the base and tall units with a nearly white on the wall cabinets but look at your own house and choose colours you like and want to see repeated in this room. Friends of mine have recently painted their base cabinets a plum colour and used the same paint to customise the shades on some inexpensive ceiling lights. I also like a nut brown and silver grey combination.

Some great suggestions here but I agree that pics or something to indicate your preferred style would be helpful. You're right about having so many choices. I've been struggling with similar problems in my home. Sometimes, the feel of what you have already will help point the way to the right color. Could we get a hint of what you have chosen?

Thanks for all your helpful ideas. I might try and get a sample of f/b white tie as i have not looked at that yet. I also will try and get a sample of dulux egyptian cotton as that looks like a colour that could work. The kitchen cabinets are in a shaker style as i am not into fussy designs and do not like bright/bold colours.. We have not got a huge kitchen so we are making the most of the space we have by knocking down stud wall that was the porch to the back door and putting our cooker in the chimney breast. I think i may have a sketch of the kitchen design on my lap top , so will try and upload that later if that will help?Once again, thank you for all your help. you have given me a lot to think about!

North facing rooms are tricky, here's what Farrow and Ball have to say about how light affects colour: http://www.farrow-ball.com/light-affects-colour/content/fcp-content

I have Dulux Egyptian Cotton on the walls (with F&B French Gray units) in my east facing kitchen it's warm in the sunlight but reads as grey other times of day, so might not be ideal. Rule of thumb would be something with a warm tone. White tie is a good shout for a warm off white. If you wanted a deeper colour the kitchen cabinets in the pic below are a combination of F&B London Stone with off white - nice warm colours.

Thanks for links. i bought a sample of white tie and think it is the one! Even my husband commented what a lovely colour it was. Will look at the links you have sent me as would be nice to see it in a kitchen setting rather than on the piece of paper taped to my walls!!

mrsmcee74, thanks for the ideas, i have just finished painting a sample of dulux egyptian cotton and am waiting for the second coat to dry - my kitchen has painted a4 sheets of paper all around the walls at the moment!!

I have 6 different samples of dulux testers that i am waiting to dry at the moment so hopefully i am going to be happy with one of them!

What did you go with Debbie? We are now choosing a colour for our kitchen cabinets in a north facing room. My husband is determined to have green cabinets (kind of turquoise-mint) but I am not keen.

I am also having this dilemma for the whole kitchen room. Want greys and off whites as want the room to feel calm but not clinical. Looking forward to seeing your pictures
