Heating for a new build, advice needed

I come to the part of my build were I have to make a decision on how to heat it ! So far my spec for insulation in my 2200 sq ft house is ..

A larger 150 mm cavity with higher amount of insulation (not sure I think 130mm), walls are going to be dry lined and extra insulation is going into the attic. The Windows are going be tribal glazed with the higher spec of insulation. Under floor heating upstairs and down.

Now I've to make a decision on how to heat it !! Have I enough insulation that an oil boiler would be fine or should I go for geothermal or air to heat ? I don't have room for a wood chip burner even though they have become more compact.. I've heard such horror story's of electric bills with the "air to heat" but my house isn't to massive.

If anyone has had any experience with these systems can you tell me about them. I did go to a building show and they all sound brilliant but the they are all trying to sell a product! Thank you

We regularly fit these systems on the houses we do as well as solar panels especially on new builds. we are not a solar company but always advise our customers on these option as they can save you a great deal of money as well as a tax free income.

Air source heat pumps
- Like ground source heat pumps, air-to-water ASHPs work better with underfloor heating systems. If underfloor heating is not possible, large radiators should be used. This is because the heat generated by the heat pump is not as high as that produced by a conventional boiler, so a larger surface area is needed to achieve similar temperatures in your home.
- Air-to-water heat pumps could be better suited to new-build properties than retrofit - this is because costs could be reduced if the heat pump is included as part of the building specification, rather than having to retrofit underfloor heating later on.
- Heat pumps can save you more on your heating bills if you're replacing an electric, oil, LPG or coal system, rather than gas.
- A well-insulated house is essential to best optimise the heat generated by your ASHP - otherwise the heat the pump is generating escapes more easily.
- Once in place, the heat pump should require little maintenance.
- Air-to-water heat pumps qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Air source heat pump costs and savings

ASHPs are cheaper than ground source heat pumps. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates that the cost of installing a typical ASHP system ranges between £7,000 and £11,000.

The payback period (the time taken to recoup the cost of the system in energy savings) depends on how efficiently your system works, the type of system you're replacing, whether you can get money with the RHI and how you'll be using the heat generated from the pump.

The EST says that an average performing air source heat pump in an average four-bedroom detached home could save:
- between £360 to £555 a year if replacing oil (non-condensing)
- between £1,200 and £1,805 a year if replacing LPG (non-condensing)
- between £715 and £1,295 a year if replacing electric heating (old storage heaters).
It also estimated that the RHI would pay an extra £905 to £1,365 a year.

I built a lot of homes and many renovations. The vast majority has been white windows inside and out. We built homes with black exterior which look very good. We also had homes with stained wood and wood vinyl on the interior. I got to say the window looses its presence this way. It kind of blends in too much and looks bland. Many other customers have agreed with this.

www.visioninteriors.ie Looking at your curtains and curtain pole, in my opinion it is the pole that initially needs to be corrected - it is a nice steel pole,however the importance of a pole being fitted correctly makes a huge difference to the hanging and look of the curtains. the brackets at each end of the pole should be at least 8"/20cm away from each sides of the window, this allows the curtains to frame the window nicely while letting in as much light as possible. The brackets should be 2"/5cm away from the finial ( ball end in this case) at each end of the pole. The space between the bracket and the finial (end of the pole) has one curtain ring only and the rest of the curtain rings/hooks are the window side of the brackets so that the curtains can hang straight. Whether you buy new curtains or hold onto your existing ones check out the fitting of the pole and remedy it - you will be amazed at the difference this can make.

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on self builds. I wouldn't be completing the building work myself, just the finishing touches like painting. I am thinking on building a 2,000 ft sq Dormer Bungalow. I would like to have underfloor heating throughout the ground floor of the Dormer, with a heating system like the air to water heat pump system. I'm not too sure on what else at the moment but good sized rooms for the kitchen and living/sitting room. How much money should I budget for the completion of the structural work? Hi everyone. Looking to become a homeowner & feel a little green, so would love some insight and advice on the above. The area that we are looking in has a very limited number of options currently on offer. There is one house available that looks in need of complete renovation/modernisation (it has been on the market for a number of years, has not been lived in full time for over a decade & looking at pictures seems like it would need a completely new heating system - looks to be all storage heaters at the moment). However, there is a good amount of garden space with it, which is really appealing and it could have great potential - because it has been on the market for so long, maybe we could haggle with the price? Every time I watch a home renovation show, it seems that there are so many hidden costs and ends up costing over what was originally budgeted! Would love to hear from someone who has recently undertaken a similar project - it is a 2 storey and would possibly need a kitchen extension or some changes to the floor plan for a more open living space downstairs. What were the costs like? How long did the project take? Did you manage to stay within your budget? Is it worth renovating over trying to do a self build? There are some sites for sale in the area too, but would be apprehensive about not being able to get planning permission on a site - would it be silly to purchase a site without planning? Having more control over the project/fewer surprise costs would be really appealing, but obviously don't want to be left with a site if we aren't granted planning. Those of you that have gone the self - build route, did you manage to stay on budget & how long was the process from start to finish?
