need something to link the window coverings

hi,
This is my living room (fireplace to be installed!).
there is something I just hate about my new window coverings, while they are the same fabric, they feel disjointed to me. I need help on how to streamline them & make the room come together.
I don't have any coverings on the double door yet.
Someone please help, it's driving me batty!

Hello Niamh6426,

I wanted to suggest perhaps trimming the blinds to insert as a recess fitted blind and perhaps in turn considering the same blind treatment for the larger windows. Not only will this help streamline the look but also I feel it perhaps adopts a less heavy aesthetic than the curtains are currently allowing for.

If you wanted to keep the idea of curtains then I would perhaps look for a plain colour that blends with the wall colourings, in this way it lightens the feel of the room enormously so the eye then focuses on the room as a whole. Also have them wide enough to cover the whole 3 sections and then open them all the way to the sides.

Really choose one or the other. Indeed the furnishings then have more room to breathe as currently all is competing for space. One thing I want to suggest to you is perhaps aligning the sofas so that 1 sits in front of the window and one opposite, so all are not at angles..

I think this too would mean you could give them more space and indeed perhaps consider moving the third one altogether away to the other end of the room or consider 2 chairs as a possible replacement for 1 of the sofas. Have a move around and see what you think. : ))

I think the Roman blinds are competing with the curtains - you've got two different directions going on which exaggerates the blankness of the gap between the other curtains. I think I might have gone without the Roman blinds and had the curtains on that large window positioned where they are while open but closing across both the large window & the smaller side windows.

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.

Hello CG, you can buy some of these and try them on site. From the pictures you posted I get the feeling you have 2 colors with similar saturation both fighting for attention. It's a little too much. I would keep the green but go softer on the red (i.e rust). You can also let yourself be inspired by the grey/silver/bordeaux floral and stripe pillows to create a brand new color scheme using these colors instead. For example, a very soft gray on the walls, gray carpet, grey/bordeaux combo in the curtains and for the sofa accents, pillows similar to these 2. It's decision time. Go for what speaks to you, but do it with elegance :-)

Oh my god! How did you do that? Amazing! Yeah the Ikea curtains were a slightly darker shade of grey in a velvety looking material (and way too long I might add). I had put the rug at the bottom of the bed to cover a big stain that is on the cream carpet so that unfortunately puts out the idea of the rugs at the side of the bed out the window (although I did love that idea too). Those pictures would work really well- I saw them on the weekend and hadnt even considered them! Thank you :)

As you've got the Abbey Road sign, why not make it a music corner? Perhaps a Beatles inspired / Sixties monochrome scheme. You could get a musical notes design printed on an outdoor canvas for the wall, or a sail & hang over to create shade. Perhaps some instrument outlines on the wall. Planting could be black & white with pops of colour. A decorative white chair & outdoor rug would look inviting. Or you could even paint boards b&w stripes like the zebra crossing!

Hi. Why not try this arrangement?
Why not take the curtains off the side windows and find a way to temporarily fix them to the other ŵall. Take pics and see what you think. I do think blinds would work better either side of the fire. I'd also square up the seating, try the green lamps on side tables either side of the sofa. Just improvise with whatever you have for now.

What a beautiful room, view and sofas. Have you considered raising the height of the curtain rails so (new) curtains would hang the full height of the wall to the floor. It's possibly a 'hotel' luxury look.

I think it might work better to have blinds on the wall with the smaller windows (perhaps in a plain colour) and have curtains on the main stretch of windows, using the existing curtains to replace the small roman blinds. This would allow the fantastic view to be the main focus.

I do think plain curtains would work well here but you perhaps aren't keen to change them as they are new? Could they be used elsewhere?

I also agree re moving the sofas so they aren't at angles, it looks a bit strange. Maybe try them in a u shape around the fire.

And perhaps painting the door frame white might make the room feel calmer.

Where did you find your lovely footstool btw?

Are you bothered about coverings for the doors? It doesn't look like you're overlooked at all? I would get the curtains made into roman blinds (there will be enough fabric to reuse the curtains) so that you have a symmetrical look that doesnt confuse the eye.

The sofa layout is also confusing but I can see that you probably don't want to put your TV above what looks like a fireplace? Is there anywhere else it could possibly go?

I think that you might need a bit of colour on the walls, the constant White is a little stark. There is also a lack of different height levels in the room, adding new elements of different heights will balance out the weight of the larger furniture. You could do this by adding console tables and placing lamps on them, or by adding taller standing lamps in necessary areas, adding pictures to the walls etc. Rearranging the furniture is a must too.

so I considered all the advice I was given & have removed the curtains altogether from the large window. I still need to remove the pole. I still think it looks a little bare so I'm thinking of putting an architrave around the window? also I'm thinking of getting a mustard/ some shade of yellow rug for under the poof (Helen Turkington for whoever asked) and the front two legs of the couches. I'm feeling a lot better with the room now, thanks for all the input.

oh, And I'm painting the window wall Elephants Breath which I believe has a hue of heather depending on light

Looking good and can you bring out out a bit more into the room? So the pieces fill the room more or is there another function like a dining area? What about a large mirror over the fire? Like the sound of the heather colour that will be lovely won't it! I think you could stick to the mauves, heathers, pistachio's and creams for any accents...You could also have a Roman blind in the window as a recess fitting. :))

oh yes, I'm saving for the essentials at the moment which is the fireplace mainly & then I'll get additional pieces , table lamps, lamps, mirrors etc :-)
