Giving our stairs a makeover. We only want to replace the spindles and the banister. Due to the colour of the newel post and bottom board these will need to be painted. Looking for colour suggestions. We would rather put in natural wood spindles and banister in a colour like white oak and leave this unpainted. How would this look. Thanks for any help.
Anyway I look at it, this is going to be something creative when finished. There aren't much combinations that you could use with this green, but white oak is a solution for the spindles. Another solution would be to go with white (this means that you'll need to paint the spindles), but you'll need to give the board, newel post, and handrail a walnut or mahogany colour. You can find some pictures for inspiration here: http://georgequinn.co.uk/product/achill-spindle/, but keep in mind that when it comes to colours, it first needs to suit YOUR taste.
The green is definitely going so need to paint the newels a different colour. It's just the board along the bottom of very wide and I think painting it white might be too much?
In that case, you'll need to pick a colour that will suit the newels and the handrail as well. White goes with almost everything, but for your staircase to look aesthetically right you cannot have more than 2-3 colours. Here are a couple of examples with different colours for the board:
