Any ideas for living room???

Hello,

I put this post up a few months ago but didn't get much of a response. I would love to inject some style into this room. I quite like industrial style, boho chic and the Parisian apartment look. I find I'm stuck with where to go with this room and am open to any ideas. The room is east facing. Thanks so much for your help!!

Try this:

1. Replace the sofa that is facing the window with 2 chairs, no wider than 30" each. You'll need a small table between the chairs.

2. Add a rug, 8 x 10'.

3. Add some larger pieces of art. The art you have over the sofa is hung far too high, and it's too small for a large wall. Find a piece of art that is approximately 3 x 4' and hang it 6" above the sofa or at a similar height on wall opposite the sofa.

4. Coordinate the colors of the rug and the artwork. Change the pillows on the sofa to the same color scheme as your rug and artwork. Look for pillows that are 20 x 20" or 22 x 22".

5. Rearrange your dining table and chairs so that the table legs are turned to be parallel with the walls. The chairs will then be facing corners, not the walls. You'll need to move the plant to do this.

6. Replace the round end table with a floor lamp and move the sofa away from the window wall a few more inches than it currently is.

7. Add a small coffee table in front of the sofa. It might need to be a 20-24" square table placed off center toward the windows. Make sure it has legs and is not a solid piece. It takes up less visual space that way.

Two ideas. Both times I would block up the entrance to the second half of the room to make more usuable space. Both ideas have a island with a dining table attached. Obviously these drawings are not to scale but everything should fit in. I would utilise the kitchen cuboards for utilities- intergrated appliances. If you can dont forget to use the space under your stairs as well. Also use the long wall at the bottom of the stairs for extra storage and alcoves.

Love white walls, especially with colorful art or black and white photos. Move the sofa/love seat next to the table...make it look like a sectional. The rug may work...but a bit too small. Your artwork is too small and way to high. May I suggest a gallery wall? The art work should only be about 8" above couch, unless you have little ones then I totally understand. Buy some frames and start experimenting with your photos...some black and white, some sepia, blow them up. Should span 2/3 the length of sofa. Lots of ideas on gallery walls on Pinterest.

Hi. I think a Chesterfield would be nice, you can find some small ones c5ft or so which will allow for a narrow lamp table or trunk. I'd go for a ŵall to wall bookcase behind the sofa with a couple of ŵall lights affixed. I don't know what styles you like but perhaps french doors painted in a dark grey to give a crittall look. Does the tv fit in the alcove if you were to add shelves and then add art over the fire with a large mirror on the ŵall facing you? I would keep colours light (is the kitchen grey?) and although it would fill the space a little I might add a narrow upholstered footstool which you can use as extra seating and/or add a tray on one half which you can accessorise

I think the only place you could put a tv is probably the corner by the window...over the fireplace is probably too high. a walnut floor and new fresher paint colour would be lovely, would you consider painting the skirting boards and fireplace white or off white to modernise them a bit? we've painted the skirting in our living room (also a walnut floor) and it looks so much better than before. (Have yet to get around to the rest of the house!!)

Lovely room! I would find a large piece of artwork for that north wall. It will give the room much more style. I would also consider finding a larger rug. The current rug is small and just gets lost in the room. Also, for some smaller touches, I would add some metallic accents and possibly add some solid colored pillows. A coffee table would be nice; something similar to the style of your dining room table? Good luck!

The sofas are different. The one on the right is much smaller and is off white in colour

One thing which has not be addressed here is your exposure and I suggest you change your wall color. East light is cool and clear. Consider either BM violet pearl or BM Weston Flax. Because you lean toward the Parisian/soho look, the violet pearl would be great.

A classic Parisian approach to your room would be classic white walls, a larger flat weave patterned rug, good art, lamps and accent/coffee tables. Items that look as though they have been acquired over time.

One long enough sofa and then add a lounge chair/s to the room. The chrome table and chairs really don't work in the room. It would be good if you could select dining chairs that can easily be pulled over to the living area when needed.

my first thought, was to loose the second sofa and bring in two chairs.

second the rug is great, but much too small.

third address the tv situation i should be on a console. that is long and reflects your style, on the wall opposite the sofa.

i would rather see you loose the end table and center the sofa to the wall . you could even pull it forward a bit and put a sofa table behind it.

think reclaimed wood for the coffee table, and something long for tv.

also the dining table... needs to be moved into the other room, or all the way into the the living space. this can be done if you loose the couch... however.. a smaller table tuck to the wall in the kitchen would be better.

The pictures you have above the sofa would serve you better if displayed in a hallway or foyer or even in a larger collection of photos in a family room. You definitely need more color in this room and a larger area rug. The sofa and wall colors look the same on my computer, so I suggest you paint the walls a color that will make the sofas stand out more. I also would suggest you find a much larger, print area rug that contains an accent color and center it in the room. Perhaps you could find a large, colorful picture to serve as wall art and also as the inspiration for the color scheme and especially for the accent color I suggested. In addition to the rug, you could use the accent color in throws and throw pillows to be placed on the sofas. I also would like to suggest that you add a wide piece of white-painted trim above the windows/patio doors (whatever) and attach the metal rod to this piece of trim. The trim will add emphasis to the glassed-in space as well as to the dark-colored rod and curtains.

Flair lighting- yes I definitely think I will loose the small couch and replace it with two chairs. Thanks for the idea of a tuck table in the kitchen which is something I didn't think of.
