Revamp pine fireplace surround

I have a pine fireplace surrounding an electric fire in my sitting room. I revamped all of the pine throughout my home but this is the last item that I would like to change. I hate pine and this surround bothers me. I would rather leave it in place rather than taking it out and replacing it. Two painters were reluctant to do anything with it but I glossed my pine bannister with very little trouble and was hoping I could do the same with the fireplace. Has anyone done this? I'm also stuck as to a colour!
