I live in two worlds.....I am in Hong Kong part of my time and in San Clemente, California for the other part.....

No car in Hong Kong, and that is great since the public transportation is amazing. I can catch a ferry, a bus, a subway, a taxi, a tram or walk above the streets in overhead walkways.....It's a great city for getting around without a car.

I could never do that in San Clemente, California where I have a car and I do drive even when I should be walking. It's the same 1/2 mile distance to the grocery store that it is in Hong Kong, yet I drive in San Clemente and walk in Hong Kong.....

If we had buses running every 10 minutes in San Clemente, I would be happy to take public transportation. If the trains would run often and late into the night in California, I would happily take the train into LA or San Diego for business meetings....but they don't.......and they are expensive and unreliable.

Hopefully one day we will be able to get around Southern California as easily as we do in Hong Kong.

I also live in a small rural town in Scotland and to go beyond it means getting a bus to the nearest bigger town about 9 miles away. It's not a problem during the day, but people here are reluctant to travel at night because it isn't safe. I would like to try to live without one considering how much it costs just to have it sitting in a garage. I don't use mine very much, but I have friends who have just given up their car so I see the problems. My friends depend a lot on other folks giving them lifts - I think that unfair on their friends and unless an emergency, I wouldn't ask anyone for a lift, I would use a taxi first, so I would probably spend more on taxis than it costs to keep the car.

Absolutely not. It's a 12 miles round trip to the nearest 'anything' where we are. The buses are every 2 hours and don't run on Sunday. Not only could I not do without my main car I'd also like to buy additional weekend 'fun' cars just to be used to drive with no specific purpose only to enjoy some private freedom!

No. I live in a small town and work in another small town in Wales. The trip to work, door to door is 30 minutes by car. If I use public transport, the fastest option would be a 15 minutes walk to the local train staition, 15 minutes trip to the central station of the nearest big city, over an hour by bus to the town where I work (it goes around and stops in a lot of villages), and about 20 minutes walk to my place of work. Add the waiting times and it would take minimum 2 and a half hours if I am lucky. Then I have to do it in reverse order to go home. Fortunately sometimes I can work from home and that is what I do when the car is being servised.

Nope - I with the culchies, I live too far away from anywhere to even dream of walking and with a clutch of small children ? Not a hope. Bicycle? No way - far too dangerous on the roads and the roads themselves leave a lot to be desired. Nope my car/minibus stays. I would never get anything done if Shanks Mare was my transport co-ordinator.

Mind you - I spent a month in Dublin and wouldn't have dreamt of using a car for most of the day. The traffic would have driven me mad (not used to it now) and the cost of parking is crazy. But there is a public transport system that works. Anytime I'm back in London I use the public transport in preference to the car.

I live in town and though I have lived in Bahrain, Oman etc where you really can't do without a car, I haven't had one in UK for years. I love walking. The public transport in Southsea is excellent and I jump on and off buses according to my exact needs. I love being free of all the hassle that goes with a car. If we want to go anywhere then I use the train or sometimes if the weather is really dreadful we do have a taxi from time to time. Its a wonderful way to live!

Not where I live now, nor when I was working. Worse still, I generally have at least two; partly for when one of them doesn't work and theoretically one is to use for everything messy like taking the dogs out and the other for best. (It doesn't work like that, often they are both broken at the same time and the dogs go in either) I should cut down to one now that I have retired, but can't decide which to keep.

A car is essential in my life, it's too convenient.

I used to think I couldn’t live without a car, but over time I realized most trips are short and manageable by walking or public transport. Still, for evenings or poorly lit areas, I added puddle lights to my car, and it makes leaving or returning home much safer and more convenient. Even if the car isn’t used every day, small upgrades like this improve the experience and give peace of mind when it’s needed.
