How high should kitchen cupboards be?

We are having cupboards built in our new home. There are 8 foot ceilings. The designer has asked if we want the upper cabinets to end 84 inches or 90 inches from the floor. There is a crown molding on top. With the higher cabinets we would have abut 3 inches from the ceiling to he top of the crown molding. What would look best for a kitchen? The cost is the same for both.

90" from the floor means you'll have 36" uppers. That'll leave you about 6" to play with for crown molding. That's what you want. 30" uppers look outdated and cheaper. Plus you lose storage space.

93" with 3" of crown or 90" with 6" of crown so that there is no dust catching gap. What you DON'T want is 90" with 3" of crown.

Thanks for the explanation. Try a wall that is drawers up to waist high, cupboards above that. YOu can add pull-out cutting boards at waist height so that you can put things there when unpacking groceries and putting things away in the cabinets and drawers: Drawers will help but they will not increase storage space by a factor of two. You could also add drawers where the microwave is now and continue to keep the microwave on top. Here is another wall of wood cabinets: Although it will not solve your storage problem, I recommend that you pull everything out of the cabinets and drawers, one drawer or shelf at a time. Be flexible about storing things elsewhere while the children are very small. Or discarding "aspirational cooking" implements (egg slicers, orange zesters, martini shakers. lobster-shaped gelatin molds) that just haven't been used in years. Families with children tend to accumulate an enormous amount of plastic stuff. In six months or a year, they will need different plastic stuff!

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

We are replacing our 1980s kitchen. The design is here: https://my-kitchen.howdens.com/plan/gjE37205200087fl We want to use these tiles: http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod44325/batik-patchwork-grey-tile.html It's a large surface area so we are quite keen not to go overboard, possibly haunted by the fact every wall is completely tiled from top to bottom in the current kitchen. The questions are: 1) Can we use the tile as an upstand of sorts, and only tile up to two tiles high (about 20cm)? Or would it be better to tile the whole area between the worktop and the wall cupboards? Should the tile height increase around the sink or will it be OK to take it all the way round at the same height? Will it be OK without a tile trim? 2) What colour sockets should we have? Can't decide between stainless steel or standard white? TIA!

Our standard practice is to use a 36" upper placed at 90" above the finished floor. Then we install a 4" plain vertical fascia on top of the upper. The crown moulding, which is usually 3-4" in height, is installed against this fascia and tight to the ceiling. This enables the crown mould to float on the face of the fascia, allowing adjustments for an inconsistent ceiling surface.

We chose to go with "outdated and cheaper" 30-inch uppers. Going 36" would not have added an additional shelf, so would have paid extra for no real gain in useable space. Wife struggles to reach top shelf as is. Instead, we purchased finished top and bottom panels for our uppers which provides a continuous flat surface to display items on top and covers the gap between uppers. Secondly we purchased galley rail to go atop all of our uppers. This continued an architectural detail in the adjacent dining area. The space above the uppers not only provides room to display items, it provides color and is less claustrophobic than running cabinets all the way to the ceiling. Instead of paying extra for hard to use upper storage, we chose all plywood construction, Blumotion full extension soft close drawer glides and got extra roll out trays for our twin pantries.
